Hey all :)

first time mum to be here so sorry in advance for the silly question lol.

is a crib the same as a bassinet?

we live in a studio and was told sometimes a baby might not use a cot so was thinking of getting a crib.

a family member wanted to gift this bassinet that has not been used but was wondering is that the same as a crib? I know that cribs and bassinets can only be used till about 6 months?

any advice appreciated.

I think crib vs. cot is just American vs. British English?

You generally have 2 categories of baby beds. The ones that go up to 6 months that include bassinets (like the one pictured), moses baskets and co-sleepers. These are good because they’re smaller so fit more easily next to your bed and are more portable to move around for naps because baby is supposed to be in the same room as you for all sleeps for the first 6 months, obviously that isn’t a factor for you in a studio, though. Downside is that they’re often outgrown well before 6 months if not by baby’s size but because they’re rolling or sitting and it’s not safe. Then you move onto a cot. So yes you could use that bassinet (assuming it meets safety standards and hasn’t gone mouldy in storage or anything) and then when it’s outgrown I would look next at a space saver cot which are usually 60x120cm (a standard cot bed is 70x140)- you can buy at Ikea.

Firstly there's no such thing as a silly question!

Secondly, I would say the same as the pp, it's terminology. I had a Moses basket for both my ds's and neither of them would sleep in it. They went straight to the cot after I gave up trying to get them to sleep in the basket.

What will you do when the baby outgrows the cot?

Crib = UK English
Bassinet = US English

I'd say don't use after 3-4 months. The baby will be able to fall out once they can sit themselves up. While some children might not do that till 6 months, some will do it earlier, and you need them in a deep cot at that point, so I'd most definately not risk them learning to sit whilst still in a crib.
