Cots and beds

This topic is for discussing cots and beds. We've spent weeks researching and testing newborn beds in real homes with real families.

Is this safe sleeping?

So in reference. Our pod seems to be too low annoyingly for our mattress with no way of highering it any further! There is a gap between the bed and the crib as the legs are weird and go outwards downwards annoyingly. The blanket rolled up will not move at all but this seems the best I can get it apart from co sleeping which im struggling with as just want to lay on my own.
Also the cushion is a reflux cushion but am happy to take it away. Just need advice and tips :)

No it’s not safe to pack the space between the cot and the bed when side carring a cot Im afraid. The cot mattress and bed mattress need to meet and not dip at all when pushed. You need to push the two mattresses together and plug the other side of the mattress with something firm (very tightly rolled towels or firm foam) and the cot sheet needs to go over the whole thing so it’s smooth.

Oh that's really annoying! Thank you for replying :) I'll see if I can find a way to make the cot mattress higher so it can be against mine 🙂

I know it kind of defeats the objective of buying an alongside crib, but it would be safer to put the side up/back on, if there is one and just use it as a cot.

No it’s not. You can put big books or blocks of wood under the legs of the cot. Either to raise all of it up or just the head end if they have reflux

I agree with pp. I'd just put the side back up. That's what I did with mine (though I didn't have a c section)

These sorts of cots are really not good for side car-ing, the sides come down but they’re not meant to stay that way. A normal wooden cot is much easier

Definitely unsafe. Also very unsafe to be using that cushion.

Your trying to make a next2me into a sidecar cot, the best thing to do is to get a wooden cot and put it next to your bed with the side taken off. This way your mattress will be flush with the cot mattress - which is much easier and practical in my opinion
