Dear MNers,
I broke my 4yo DS bed my sitting on it. Photos attached. The side panel that holds the mattress is split where the connector bits are. Has anyone had this problem and managed to fix it? The bed was bought years ago from mothercare so can't buy the part, and couldn't find anything similar on the net.
Do you think I just need to chuck it?
I'm soangry with myself. I've ruined the bed and the weekend.
On the other hand, wound anyone recommend kids bed from IKEA or similar?

Oh OP - you're being a bit harsh on yourself there! Go to B&Q and get some wood glue and some clamps. Glue it, clamp it and let it dry. I'm sure it'll be fine Smile

BlueBlueBerries · 22/06/2024 14:45

Agree, wood glue will sort it! No need to throw out a perfectly good bed Smile

Piggy52a · 22/06/2024 14:45

I’ve done that before and No more nails and some clamps should sort it.

Glue it, clamp it, problem solved!

socks1107 · 22/06/2024 14:50

I agree. And it's a bed no need to ruin a whole weekend just glue it, and carry on with your day don't be hard on yourself

Itsmecathy87 · 22/06/2024 18:48

Awww thank you all, will try the wood glue and clamps!
Does it have to be wood glue? I have gorilla glue in the shed, will that do? Apologies for more questions, my DYI skills not great

I've used electrical tape in this situation previously 😬 it's not meant for adult weight, don't talk about yourself that way.

AmelieTaylor · 22/06/2024 18:54

Why do you think it's ruined the weekend?

just put the mattress on the floor until you fix the bed, he's 4, it'll be fun.

the wood probably had a knot in it or something. I would actually replace the wood. I'd remove the fittings, & take the wood and fittings to somewhere like B & Q and they'll cut some wood for you, and if you ask nicely will cut out the holes for the fittings and advise you which pot of tester paint will be best.

it'll all be fine!

It's not ruined OP, kids beds are not designed for any person above the age of about 7. Don't beat yourself up about it. Gorilla glue would likely work but you'll need something to hold it together until it dries, maybe some heavy duty tape or a clamp if you have one.

Thanks all! Not sure why I felt weekend was ruined now. I guess because I had created more work lol.
I was sat on the bed refolding and sorting out DS clothes (his wardrobe was so messy and some of the clothes were too small, I was determined to sort that bit out). Then DS got on the bed too and started faffing about and trying to climb on my back. After few minutes of this the bad gave in. I lost my sh1t, shouted at my son. Then apologised. When DH saw the ed he said oh well time for a new bed. Then I measured the existing bed, looked at which beds are available out there, also we might aswell get a bigger bed (son is 4, but quite tall for his age). Realised that the room is so small, we are limited on what can fit in the room, how is DS going to live in it when he's older. At the same time I can't see us affording bigger house. I'm overwhelmed my the shit-tip that our house is currently.
But since reading your replies I changed ny outlook completely, it's just a little accident that is completely fixable. Thanks si much to all for advice and reassurance

Seconding a gluing fix for now but also sounds as if he’s a great age for a rethink on his room furniture. If space is an issue (as it usually is in UK bedrooms) have a look at better storage solution.
We always used a cabin bed (found a Stompa on eBay which was brilliant). Wardrobes up to ceiling height for additional storage (IKEA PAX with double rails and shelves). Use all the wall space and under bed space.
