Cots and beds

This topic is for discussing cots and beds. We've spent weeks researching and testing newborn beds in real homes with real families.

Travel cot abroad for 2.5 YO

Hoping for some advice - we'll be traveling abroad with our DD who will be nearly 2.5 YO and is quite tall/big for her age.

House we are renting does not provide a cot, and I'd really rather not buy and transport one just for this trip (4 nights).

There is a spare twin mattress from one of the rooms that has bunk beds. I wanted to just put that on the floor by our bed but as DD goes to bed much earlier than us, DH is worried she won't settle and doesn't want her to have the freedom of the room unsupervised.

What would you do??

We are going away for a week when my ds is 2.5 and we just intent to have him in with us, he is much more likely to settle and sleep well being somewhere other than home. Even if he wakes up now he just seeks us out. What does your child do? What is the worth with them her having free range in the room, what does he think she will do ?

@googledidnthelp sorry if this is completely daft, but how does that work when everyone says their child sleeps in with them? Presumably, you don't go to bed when they do at 7 PM?

Do you trust that they won't fall out the sides of the bed when you leave the room ? Walk me through it Smile

I mean every child is different but my ds doesn't roll about and sleeps in a double bed in his room and has never fallen out. We confidently leave him without fear of falling out and do not go to bed when he does, however, there have been times when away he does stay up as that's just the way holidays go and then we all go to bed together.

He has previously fallen out getting when we stayed somewhere new and didn't leave a night light on , that was our mistake, but he didn't roll out in his sleep.

So I would suggest leaving a light on so she can see when she wakes up. If your worried about rolling out you can move your pillows to the edges as they most likely would bumper from going to far or you could put rolled up towels under the sheet as a bumper.

Some airlines (eg easyJet) let you bring 2 items of hold luggage for children FoC. So you could bring your own travel cot if you really wanted. I know it's not ideal as they are so heavy....

Otherwise, 2 years old is a good time to transition to a proper bed anyway, especially if they are big for their age.

I used to roll a large towel up along the long side and then put it under the sheet near the edge of a mattress and then tuck the sheet back under itself, so the child will be sleeping on a double layer of sheet IYSWIM. This would make a bit of a barrier to stop them rolling off the bed.

Both of mine moved to a regular bed before they turned two and were absolutely fine
