This topic is for discussing cots and beds. We've spent weeks researching and testing newborn beds in real homes with real families.

Sleepyhead and pod type things- worth it or not?

These weren’t around when I had my first two children and seem to have become very popular.
I’ve heard mixed reviews, my best friend said she never ended up using hers, but a lady at work said it was the best thing she bought for her newborn and if she could only buy one thing it would be one of these!
They aren’t cheap so looking to see if they are worth the hype or not.

My daughter used a Sleepyhead but I gather that they're not recommended anymore, especially for sleeping overnight.

Idontevenknow · 01/10/2022 16:10

I could be wrong, but I'm sure somewhere it says the should only be used for supervised sleep, so not overnight or unattended naps

Muddledandbefuddled · 01/10/2022 16:10

I wouldn't. The Lullaby Trust considers them a SIDS risk.

Lady at work was more saying to plonk baby in around the house in the daytime rather than for overnight. Is it just a very overpriced pillow?!

100% yes to a sleepyhead. Was the best thing we bought!

MilkAndFenty · 01/10/2022 16:19

@Crimsonripple did you use it for popping baby in around the house while you made a cuppa or watched tv ect? Is it better than just having a Moses basket in the lounge? What’s the hype?! 😂did you find baby settled better in it for naps?

We loved our Sleepyhead Deluxe thing.. but never ever left baby in it unsupervised. I've seen some parents put their baby down for the night inside it, when it's been laid down in the cot Confused this is bonkers and a huge SIDS risk. I breastfed my babies post section and found it great to lie them down in beside me in bed, I was then able to get a cup of tea.

MilkAndFenty · 01/10/2022 16:26

@ronaldcat oo I hadn’t thought of using it for feeding. I might invest!

I’m sure that babies love them and all but is it worth the stated SIDS risk?

hoowhoo · 01/10/2022 16:27

Believe the hype with sleepyheads they're amazing!

I used a sleep pod with mine, it was good for letting her sleep in the day, I did also use it at night. The one I bought had a firm mattress and extra ventilation in the materials. It was the only way I could get her to sleep and after a while we started cosleeping and she slept better. I found this website good, it explains in more detail why the advice in not to use it. www.madeformums.com/baby/are-baby-sleeping-pods-and-nests-safe/

We used it for everything as he hated his Moses basket. He also slept in it on a stand we made (I don't want to hear anyone preach about SIDs) as it was the only thing he would sleep in at night. I think he loved the fact it was enclosed and he felt safe.

We loved ours too and used it all the time. We did actually use it for overnight sleeping as 6 years ago it was approved for overnight sleeping and our little one slept like a dream.
