Chicco Next2Me Dream height - is it safe?

My partner and I had been looking at these online and then went to a second-hand baby sale and found one for £50, so we snapped it up!

I've just put it up and found that our bed seems to be too low for it. It is quite a low bed, but not super low, so I didn't think anything of it beforehand. However, even with the side tilted down, there are still about 14cm between the top of the lowered bar and the top of the mattress.

The guide says that the minimum height from floor to mattress is 49cm; the height of our bed is about 42-43cm.

How much of a problem would this be? I get that the supposed danger is the baby rolling out or into the side of the crib, but that would still happen if the crib was lower as the height of the side wouldn't change. I know it would be a problem if the bed was too high, as they could potentially roll and become stuck facing the mattress.

I guess I'm just wondering whether this is actually dangerous or just undesirable. Of course the guide says not to use with beds outside that size guide, but we can hardly buy a new bed! I'm wondering whether we should just cut our losses and try and sell it on.

Hmm I'd think that it's safe enough until baby learns to roll - so for 4-5months maybe? But you might want to consider how easily you could put a reassuring hand on them if they are restless? I often slept holding my baby's hand as it seemed to help him settle again if he started to wake.

This is the difference (please excuse the messy bed Blush). When lying down I can easily see into the crib and reach out, though my elbow does need to rest on the side of it.

And when lying on my right side I can easily see in and reach over with my left hand.

This may seem very silly but it's my first baby and my partner tends to take the more relaxed view, so I need some perspective!!!

So I think it will definitely be ok for a few months. The do get more wriggly once they get past 12wks and it's surprising how mobile they can be... They'd probably have a hard time escaping, but you might end up having to change the bed before 6m.

Also it's not silly, you want them to be safe. It's maybe worth getting a different one for peace of mind and to avoid having to change their bed at say 4months. There will be things you worry about which you can't change, if you think the crib will bother you then why not just sort it now 🙂

Thanks so much for your answers! I'm trying to think around the problem and wondering if a mattress topper would improve it.

It does seem a bit silly to have something we wanted to use for at least 6 months, but have it become potentially unsafe after only 3-4. Annoyingly looking at other Next2Me models and another brand, they all have a minimum height that is above our bed's height!

Our chunky baby outgrew the next to me anyway at 4 months so for us it would have been fine. He now lives in the travel cot in our room and we bought a proper mattress for it
