Hi all,
I am a first time mum(little one arriving in early December) and all these are very new to me so do pardon me if you feel that what I am going to ask is really stupid because I still learning something new everyday!
My husband and I have been discussing/argueing about how many cots do we actually need in our 3-storey house in terms of practicality and mainly for my benefit as I will be at home with baby most of the (day)time until he comes back from work in evening. My thoughts are having a travel cot with a decent mattress(thinking of graco contour and baby will sleep ALOT in the first few months)which will double up as a play pen in time to come when she is older and placing this on the ground floor living room where I will be spending most of my time both in the living room and the kitchen which is next to it.
Then,I have just bought a cot bed(for use up to 4 years old)on the ready on the 1st floor(baby's own room)at the moment because my husband and I intend to move our baby to her own room from the 7th month, well at least that's the plan.
Now,our master bedroom is on the 2nd floor which is also the top floor,I proposed getting the petite cot from Mamas & Papas for our bedroom where she sleep with us at night for the first 6 months.
I know this might sound excessive but I am thinking about the practicality of daily life here as there's no way I can run up and down then stairs every 2 min to check on her where she is sleeping,be it the 1st or 2nd floor when I am on the ground floor or vice versa, and obviously I cannot leave her unattended!my husband is not sure about having the travel cot on the ground floor but baby need a proper place to sleep during the day time(I don't want to get a Moses basket as that won't long more than a couple of months so I thought it's pointless)where I will be spending most times downstairs!
So here I am,asking if anyone has any suggestion to what I should do or anybody has a similar situation as me?if somebody could enlighten me and shed some light that will be very much appreciated!Thank you!

Sounds a bit pfb but money aside (and would you do similar for subsequent children?) Is there any reason why you couldn't use the cot in baby's room in your room until you move baby to their own room? That way you're not getting baby used to a new bed and new room at the same time, the bed will already be familiar.

Or, as a friend did, travel cot upstairs but main cot downstairs until baby went into their own room - again, they were used to the cot so only had to deal with the room change.

The idea of a travel cot which would all be used as a playpen when baby is older is a practical and sensible choice. Although if you only have one child at present, is not essential. We used that option more with ds and dts especially as they started getting mobile and destroying the older one(s) games.

I understand you saying you won't get much use out of a Moses basket, but tbh the ability to have them on a rocker and gently rock baby to soothe was invaluable, as were baby mats and bouncers. And babies sleep in lots of places rather than a proper bed - car seat, pram, baby mat on the floor even!

We went for the video baby monitor option in their room once they were in a cot. Meant I could keep and eye on the dc and do the other things which needed doing too.

well, the reason people go for Moses baskets is because babies don't tend to Luke sleeping in giant cots when they're first born. They're not pricey but were handy to move baby around the house during the first few weeks.

Why not use the cotbed in your room then move it into the babies room when the time comes? May help the baby adapt to the new room better.

This time we're going for a snuzpod, which lasts until 6 months and has a removable basinette to take round the house. Also have you looked at things like the sleepy head or poddle pod? They're good for young babies to sleep on and you won't need a whole travel cot taking up your sitting room and can be moved about easily.
