This topic is for discussing cots and beds. We've spent weeks researching and testing newborn beds in real homes with real families.

Cots and beds

What's more important, the space between two bunks or space between top bunk and ceiling?

I've found two bunk beds I like.

One is 150cm high, but 5 year old DS1 can't sit up in the bottom bunk (would be my 3 year old in bottom bunk, who can sit up, but obviously won't be able to in a year or so). This obviously gives DS1 on top bunk more space.

Or one that is 170cm high, so more space for DS2 on bottom bunk (I think we'd still be able to sit up there and read bedtime stories). This leaves about 25 inches between frame and ceiling for DS1 (i.e. just an inch or two 'space' for DS1 to sit up at the moment).

Any thoughts or experiences welcome, as I'm going a bit crazy bunk bed googling!

I'm 5ft1, so the prospect of changing beds isn't enthralling me either, but it's more important that they last as long as possible (although we are getting bunk beds that can separate into twins as / when needed).

Thanks

Just to clarify, the 170cm high bunk, DS1 would be able to sit up, but would only leave a couple of inches 'growing room' until he won't be able to sit up.

Can u separate the beds now?

I wouldn't bother getting bunk beds if thats the choice. Like you said, changing the bedding will be a pain and if one of the children can't sit up, its not ideal

Nanny - we are expecting DS3 in August, so need to move DS1 and DS2 into the same room ASAP. The room is about 10 by 11, so would benefit from bunks whilst we can use them, leaving space for their toys still (but I'd want to buy bunks that can separate into twins as / when DS1 gets too old for bunks - not sure when that will be!).

We haven't bought the bunk bed yet, but my list of criteria is that they can be separated and a removable ladder (as we're expecting DS3, so I can remove it in the day if they all end up playing in the room in a year or so).

I'm quite demanding Grin

I'm just not minimalist enough to have just a bedroom with beds in and no clothes storage / toys space.

If there's quite a bit of space between bottom bunk and floor, you've always got the option of cutting the bottom legs. Had to do that when stupidly didn't measure DSD's high bunk and she ended up inches from the ceiling. She doesn't have a bottom bunk though, only a desk/shelf unit type thing.

Hmm, not sure I'd trust DHs DIY skills to cut the legs off a bunk bed, without having a wobbly bunk.

We live in a 1980s house, so it's not like it's a low ceiling cottage. I guess it's going to be a compromise either way, but I'm not sure what's a bigger compromise to make.
