Would you buy a second hand cot and mattress?

Am trying to get a cot cheap locally on ebay (low budget!) and was planning on trying to get something v v cheap and spending budget on a new mattress BUT theres a cot on ebay locally for £35 that comes with mattress and it says has been kept at grandmas house and never used so mattress is still new.
From picture the mattress is not in protective wrapping any more and so has been lying out in the cot I presume.

Is the mattress ok to buy second hand? or is it the dust etc that may now be on it that makes it unsafe even though it hasnt actually been slept on?

What you think??

Cot yes - had a very second hand one from a friend, repainted etc. and was perfect.

Bought new mattress and wouldn't risk a second hand one unless from a friend and knew accurate story or to buy a new one. More important IMHO than a new buggy etc.

Cot yes, a second hand one would be fine.

Mattress, definitely not. I would follow the SIDS advice and get a new one for every baby. DC1 had a new cotbed and mattress, when we have a DC2, we'll get a new mattress for them.

In addition to the second hand cot questions, I have inherited a lovely Stokke Sleepi cot and and bedding, we will be buying a new mattress, but I wondered whether it is ok to reuse the mattress covers and sheets if washed at 60 degrees? I would be grateful for any advice from any mothers out there who might know!! I am a first time mum to be and a little unsure about what to do.

I would reuse a cot and bed sheets, but not a mattress.

Why catsareevil?

I would do it the other way round.

Cots used to get handed down from sibling to sibling over the generations.
We seemed to be getting away from the disposable age we were locked in for a while and recycling things so iot makes sense using a second hand cot.

I would say go for it Tallulah and I would use the mattress if there is enough evidence to suggest it hasn't been used.

cot yes ,mattress no

catsareevil · 23/04/2011 19:52

Because a cot can be cleaned, sheets can be washed, but I had heard that it was dangerous to re-use a mattress.

Thanks so much for all your advice! I will get a new mattress (as it has been used) but re-use the sheets and covers as I can wash them all at 60 degrees :)

Sorry catareevil. I misread your post.

My mistake.

coastgirl · 24/04/2011 12:18

Cot yes, sheets yes, mattress wouldn't risk it I'm afraid.

hello, am new to all of this but pondering buying a second hand cot myself. Can anyone explain what the problem is with a second hand mattress? (Does the problem even apply if it is machine-washable?)

Thanks a lot.
