Sleeping bags from birth?

Can sleeping bags be used from birth for any weight of baby? Grobag stipulate that the baby must be over 8ib 8oz but the ones from J Lewis and Mothercare just state 0-6m.

Try a sleeping gown when DC is very small, like this one.

Most sleeping bags have poppers on the sides, to prevent tiny/skinny ones from slipping down.

Thanks pluperfect, but isn't that in place of a sleepsuit, rather than an alternative to sheets and blankets?

I used mine from birth (well, maybe not for the first couple of weeks). DS1 was a winter baby in a cold house, and kicked off the tightest swaddling within seconds - I thought it was preferable to him dying of frostbite!!

Just assure yourself that they can't slip down inside it.

Mmmm, yes, possibly. I used it at times in addition to a bag, or on its own (mind you, that was summer).

They are lovely, anyway, particularly as the little ones get bigger and the number of poppers on their sleepsuits increases to a very inconvenient degree!

PLEASE make sure you get a grobag one if using with a newborn. I bought a cheap supermarket one when DS was about 6 months old and didn't notice that the poppers on the shoulders didn't do up properly. I went to get him up in the night and it just fell off.

I got mine from e-bay at an average of about a tenner each.

We've used sleeping bags and sheets and blankets together since about 3 months. Before then we swaddled with sheets and blankets.

The swaddleme worked well for us.

Thanks for your replies. We are planning on buying a sleepcurve so we cannot put the baby in the feet to foot postion hence the need for a sleeping bag.

Littleoldme, I can't use a grobag from birth, because they can't be used if the baby is below 8lb 8oz in weight and its unlikely this baby will be that big at birth. I take your point about cheaper bags though and I'll go to either mothercare or john lewis.

We started using sleeping bags fairly early as DD screamed like a banshee if she kicked off her covers! Very impressed with the ones from mothercare and M&S, but the poppers on the one from john lewis started to come away from the fabric.

I used sleeping bags from birth with my second child. I bought proper newborn ones from Mothercare and they fitted her fine. She weighed 8lbs.

herewegoloopyloo · 06/10/2010 09:55

The mothercare ones we have could be used from 7lb 7oz although we used them from slightly smaller (7lb 5)

John Lewis ones are cheaper than "new" sleeping bags, and are of quite nice soft jersey. However, try checking TKMaxx, as out local one do discounted GroBag sleeping bags, too.
