There is lots of nice stuff in there, depends what you are looking for really. The chicken is fine, love the rice/pasta/basics and they do the best chicken tikka sauce Crisps are fine, part cooked bread is yummy.

timeforanewnickname · 16/04/2010 09:06

(looks around in case overheard!) I go there. It is much cheaper for lots of stuff. In our shop the prices are:

49p Mozzarella (same brand as in Sainsburys)
£1.49 Parma ham (as above)
39p for garlic ciabatta

Loads of lovely items for really good rates. You couldn't do a whole shop in there but certainly good prices and nobody will know unless you tell them.

DarrellRivers · 16/04/2010 09:42

I used to shop there and am shopping snob (fave shop Waitrose)
Good quality biscuits, crisps, bread, cereals etc and vvvvv good value fruit and vegetables
I did use to top up meat/ham etc at butchers/Waitrose etc and do bulk of shop at Aldi
Was bit of a drive for me though, so now I have newborn am getting ocado as a treat for a bit
Nappies were great and cheap as well
Lidl I found less good quality

cupofcoffee · 16/04/2010 11:04

aldi has lots of good stuff and prices are good. I can't get everything I like in there so I tend to do alternate shops there then Tesco

sungirltan · 16/04/2010 11:07

good for brie, cold meat, dishwasher cleaner, fruit and veg but have to go early to get that.

i also like their stone baked pizza but i dont think they rae cheaper.

excellent humous, veg crisps, chocolate, frozens desserts

dh is addicted to their bread.

BariatricObama · 16/04/2010 11:07

i do tins and dry goods. i don't touch the meat.

BariatricObama · 16/04/2010 11:08

you can't beat lidl for dishwasher tablets and loo roll

jonicomelately · 16/04/2010 11:12

They do mini smoothie lollies. Great for healthy desserts/snacks.

jonicomelately · 16/04/2010 11:13

There are in Aldi.

sungirltan · 16/04/2010 11:13

oooh joni - i must find them next time!

LoveBeingAMummy · 16/04/2010 11:20

And the mini jaffacakes are soooo yummy

Agree re whole shop, i tend to shop there and then go over the road to waitrose to finish off. Oh and the passatta (sp) is so good and so much cheaper. Agree bisuits and mozzarella. Toliet/kitchen rools good too, Painkillers are very good and very cheap.

bebesequin · 24/04/2010 20:58

Soave is good and 3.29
parmesan and fresh orange also ok fruit and veg fine also

jbg · 11/05/2010 13:05

I shop in Aldi for:
chocolate (Lidl good too)
pasta, milk, ham, fruit & veg, yogurt drinks, bread, jaffa cakes, crisp/similar, loo roll, shampoo, conditioner, face powder compact: transluscent & the bronzing one, mascara: volumising, clear lip gloss, eye cream and gel (excellent value) sun cream, canned fizzy orange & lemon drinks - but not cola, pesto sauce.

I think they're excellent value. Unfortunately, the Aldi close to me doesn't have the full range of toiletries but the stuff they do stock, is good. I also shop in Lidl, I like their anti-wrinkle cream in the black tube - brilliant, their Greek yogurt is fab.

I started shopping in Lidl and aldi in Nov and its made a huge difference.

vintage · 11/05/2010 13:23

there are lots of nice stuff in Lidl and Aldi i like our Morrisons the best at the moment though. It is small and new and lovely

Nicolaplus1 · 26/05/2010 22:59

I have recently popped into aldi the last couple of weeks and was really surprised.

I actually think the meat is really nice.

I like the feeling of being on hol LOL for 10 mins as ist quite continental

My local does the most amazing all butter fudge truly amazing!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 26/05/2010 23:09

I shop there for certain products

Coffee (their Specially selected Columbian stuff is pretty good at £1.99, and I am a bit of a coffee snob)

Jams/ marmalade- really good value, good selection

Their veg- always good offers eg this week baby plum tomatoes 39p, really nice. Their lower priced cabbage etc I get for the rabbits!

Dishwasher tabs, washing-up liquid, hand-soap dispensers. Cube of tissues 69p, in nice box! Good quality binbags at reasonable price

Crisps- lots of varieties, mini-cheddar-type thingys 75p

Cold meat- good selection, cheaper than elsewhere. And their own butter (norpak) good and far cheaper than big brands, similar taste. Good selection of cheese ( I like the mozarella too)

I get rolls (local) and morning goods too.

The meat is OK, I guess, but I am spoiled with my local butcher, so it doesn't compare!

Oh- their frozen pizza baguettes (2 for 89p) are fab, kids love them for lunches

caketinrosie · 07/06/2010 17:52

I love aldi!! Buy the basics, bread milk vegetables fruit and tinned toms etc the meat selection is fine beef mince, chicken, pork chops and cheap frying steak are all much cheaper. The luxury items need a trip to tesco but there's nothing wrong with aldi basic stuff it halved my food bill!

serin · 07/06/2010 18:54

Seriously, I don't think it is much cheaper than any of the leading supermarkets and they don't do a budget range.

Eg. pack of orange juice for kids lunches is 37p in Tesco, much more than that in Aldi,
same with ketchup and cereals.

I like the essentials range at Waitrose and find that over the cost of a whole shop Waitrose is good at the moment.

bacon · 09/06/2010 13:58

Be careful as some of it is false economy. I'm usually on the food forum and recently bought a load of frozen salmon. To my horror it only contained 4 pieces and when defrosted absoltely tiny. To me that was false economy as I need the whole pack to feed the two of us.

Yes, the veg is great value. Bread ok, jam umm..gluteny, chocolate yuk, cheese good, ham went off really quick, meat absolute no no. wine ok

But I still ended spending £80 and some of it was awful. and not forgetting you cant get loads of stuff in there so I ended up having to go to sains/waitrose anyway.

Get for a top-up shop or when you really have to be careful with the pennies but tried it many times and I dont find I come away much better off.

Chil1234 · 13/06/2010 18:23

I don't like Aldi. As others have said, you can't do a full shop there so that's not good if you're short of time. And some of their stuff is frankly just horrible. Their baked beans and canned tomatoes may be cheap but you can see why the minute you open the tin... all liquid. Their range & quality of fruit and veg is pathetic.

When it comes to cost-cutting, I think decent food should be last on the list quite honestly. Plenty of other things in the budget should get axed first.

itsybitsy08 · 13/06/2010 19:52

Absoutley nothing wrong with aldi at all!
However as others have said, i find i cant do a full shop so dont go any more!
I go to sainsburys and buy all my basics in their basic range eg big bag of rice 79p, pasta around 35p, chopped tomatoes 33p, large punnet of mushrooms, onions 89p, loo roll and kitchen roll is fine, chocolate digestives are lovley with a cuppa 32p and their 27p bars of chocolate i like better than cadburys! There is a large range of other basics i just cant think! I use sainsburys own brand cleaning products (not the basics though, they dont smell very nice) and they are half the price of branded products and do just as well!
There are always some good offers on too across everything, at the moment some nice branded toiletries for £1!
Found my shopping bill has seriously decreased shopping like this!
Plus you get to use your nectar points which i save over the year, they soon add up, and i get some nice christmas pressies with them
