I have been on another thread recently and mystery shopping was mentioned as a way to make some extra cash. I have just been on the retaileyes website and started to apply but have stopped because they want to know a lot of personal information, is anyone doing mystery shopping for thos company? Are they reputable? Just concerned as they want to know well everything really

Yes I'm registered with them - what you earn really depends upon whereabouts you live and how easy it is for you to do work.

Some longer projects can be quite lucrative, others just cover the cost of a meal.

IME of several companies - mystery shopping is likely to net you somewhere between £3 and £25 per job, plus reimbursement for items from shops/cafes/fast-food joints etc. There are a reasonable number of jobs where you don't need to buy an item if you don't want to worry about short term cashflow - assessing service without buying anything. It's worth signing up for several companies - there's GFK, Gapbuster, Optimum Contact, Bare, GrassRoots as well.

I used to do mystery shopping for retail eyes - did lots of pub restaurants! Also worked for another company where all I did were post offices and McDonalds!!!

venusonarockbun · 20/02/2010 10:24

Fatzac - Post Office staff can almost 'smell' the mystery shoppers as soon as they walk through the door!

ruddynorah · 20/02/2010 12:45

retail eyes don't pay very well. it's mostly fast food places and pubs paying around £5 plus expenses. you get more for night club ones if you can do them. tiger tiger pays i think £20 plus £30 spending money which is pretty good if you're out anyway! then you fill in a bizarre questionnaire rating the ratio of men to women, the volume of the music, and the atmosphere on the dance floor!

better money is grassroots where you get more like £15 to £20 for banking and retail. i once got £45 for doing a barclays one. easy money.

Hi - I just signed up for Gapbuster and Retaileyes adn the Gapbuster Terms & Conditions said that I had to:

agree that it is my responsibility to consult with a tax professional or financial adviser to determine my individual tax responsibilities. I understand that failure to comply with these instructions may result in me not being paid for work completed. I understand that payment is only made by the 24th day of the month, one month after GAPbuster's receipt of a valid assignment.

Has anyone made that much money that it's necessary? Apols if its obvious that anyone who does this mystery shopping thing should sort out the tax thing too - guess I'm a bit niaive when it comes to that sort of thing having never been self employed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Basically you are self employed when doing MS and therefore its up to you to sort out your own tax etc.
