@Lsgandhi20 but what if you are disabled/ in too much pain to stand and cook a meal? Or have no one to cook for??? There are so many variables on this topic I think you will be hard pressed to get the answers you want

Lsgandhi20 · 15/08/2026 21:09

Too much . 7 meals a week for family of 3.

Thanks. I agree of course but the more answers there are , the variables should even out.

Ok.

Still not sure how what others do or don’t do is going to help.

Are you happy with your choice?

If not then just stop or cut down 🤷‍♀️

Lsgandhi20 · 15/08/2026 21:12

Is that per week?

You need to quote, copy and paste or tag people or we don’t know who you’re talking to.

I’m not sure what you are wanting to know. I have never used a food delivery app and last had a takeaway in 2019. But that’s what works for me, for my family and our budget/what we like eating.

7 meals a week is insanity?!!
Get an instant pot/slow cooker and make use of your freezer. Jacket potatoes, spaghetti bolognaise, chicken nuggets and oven chips, oven ready meals like pizza or lasagne?

The only time I get takeaway is maybe once a month or every 2 months with this COL crisis! And then it's usually just for me and DH once kids went to bed on a sat! And never use Deliveroo or Ubereats. Justeat/with takeaway directly or we call and drive to collect.

it does . I am looking at my bills . It increased gradually . Even taking into account food inflation
it is a lot. When I first used the apps there were offers which all disappeared

I don't and have never used them.
It's very rare I have a takeaway, I think I have had three or four this year.
It's not really about the cost for me , I just never seem to fancy it, even on days like today when I have been at work for 10 hrs doing a manual job that was hard work.
I have just put a frozen tescos pizza (£1.20 ) in the oven .

If @Lsgandhi20 are having 7 per week add up how much you're spending over a average month I bet its a fortune !

notnorman · 15/08/2026 22:19

I used to do £60 a week but right now it’s £0

Can you actually cook? It's worth doing, and not that hard. That's a crazy amount of takeaways.

murasaki · 15/08/2026 22:30

I mean I find it boring, but it makes financial and nutritional sense, and the food tastes good. And it's much easier now you can get recipes for anything from the Internet rather than owning cook books. Plan a week's meals, shop for that, crack on. Chatgpt is helpful for new ideas and dietary requirements.

minipie · 15/08/2026 22:37

I have never used a delivery app

occasionally I do get delivery - maybe 4x a year? but from places set up for delivery rather than only via deliveroo or whatever. We do eat out a fair bit so it’s not really about money, more I just don’t think takeaway is all that good.

I have things like pizza and stuffed pasta in the freezer for can’t be arsed to cook days. Those pouches of dal and flavoured grains/rice are useful for this too. And batch cooked meals.

yonem · 15/08/2026 22:40

7 times a week - is it dinner every day? Or a mix of dinner and lunch?

What kinds of food are you getting? If you aren’t a confident cook you could try supermarket ready made versions as a first step to weaning yourself off the deliveries. Eg oven pizza, burgers/frozen fish/breaded chicken and oven chips, stir fry meal deals, pre-marinaded or pre-diced meats, jar sauces, microwave rice etc are all easy but cheaper and healthier. You can get frozen veg portions which are super easy to add on the side as well. Maybe a few ready meals like lasagne mixed in once or twice a week for the busiest days.

Then you could gradually start to cook a few things from scratch once you’ve got into the swing of things.

Usually dinner ( hot meals) but yes I am reducing my dependence and swapping with the consumables that have been suggested here . It is a dire situation!
