Fuel duty

Why have the government not reduced fuel duty? They are getting far more income with the price rise and nobody has mentioned this. In Australia fuel duty was slashed.

They cut it by 5p in 2022 and have kept it there, due to rise back again this September with a 1p increase

If they cut the fuel duty any more, where do they make the shortfall from? Benefit cuts? Sevices?

The Government is massively in debt and under pressure to balance its books.

If it does see an increase in income it might look to use the money towards paying back debt, some of which has got more expensive because Rishi Sunak didn't fix the interest rate when rates were low or not cutting services like the NHS, instead of reducing fuel duty, which has been frozen for years. The cost of petrol and diesel is still below historical peaks. I remember paying 199 for diesel in the fuel crisis of the early 2000s and its not there yet. You could say that the recent rises are just prices coming back up to a long term average.

They are announcing some package this week, maybe they might drop the September rise in that

Without very strong measures to ensure any cut is passed on, whats the point?

The 5p cut wasn't all passed on, forecourt margins on fuel have doubled, you must have noticed that SM fuel is often no cheaper than a small indie.

We cannot keep relying on the state to helping us out all the time, maybe drive less, slower, walk or cycle..... Whenever possible

I guarantee that you didn’t pay £1.99 for diesel in the early 2000s.

What a weird thing to lie about!
