UC and temporary extra income (exam marking)

Hello,

I'm a 0.6 teacher currently claiming Universal Credit after marriage breakdown severely cut my household income. I do exam marking every summer and I obviously know I need to declare these extra earnings but I'm just wondering if anyone here has had the same situation and did it cause major problems with the UC? Will I just receive less/none of the UC for those months?

I just thought I'd ask here before asking on the online journal to see if anybody could give a quicker answer!

If you earn more in one month, your UC payment for that specific assessment period will decrease, as UC is designed to adjust automatically to your monthly income. For every £1 you earn (after tax, NI, and pension), your payment is reduced by 55p

As above. UC will know as extra earnings will be reported through HMRC. If you earned enough to stop your Uc for that month, the claim can stay open for up to six months of zero payments. As above for each additional £1 earned you lose 55p of UC.

Thanks that's really helpful, so I actually don't need to do anything and they will just adjust accordingly? It will just be June and July that I'm paid extra.

If the marking is paid via payroll/PAYE then UC will pick it up via employer's reports in same way as if you'd done overtime or whatever in your main job.

If it's seen as contracting/self employed and paid gross you'll need to advise UC and tell them your gross, expenses etc.

Thank you for replying, it's PAYE but from a different employer (exam board) than my permanent employer (school). So should all work itself out. Thanks for your help 😃

UC will pick it up automatically yes, and you will lose 55p for each extra pound you earn from marking from your UC. So basically you will mark all of the exams for half of the money 👍 no surprises for guessing whether I bothered again the summer after.

Yes @dahliadiva I'll do it this year as I've committed and also I find it useful CPD but doubt I'll be rushing to sign up for next year if I'm still in the same position with UC.

You are required to report changes in income even though it will be picked up via real time information from HMRC. Just go on your UC account to the report a change section and let them know.

This. I don't understand why people say that UC is better for working people than tax credits. The taper is so much that it's not worth taking on extra tasks/responsibility.

Thanks @oviraptor21 I'll make sure I do that as well, don't want to risk any cock ups and owing money back. All new to me in the last 6 months post separation and very grateful for the support I've had.
