Overpriced paper and plastic bags at supermarkets

In the uk we’ve reached a point where everyday price gouging and rip offs have been normalised.

10p plastic bags were supposedly introduced for the environment - yet even piece of fruit and veg is wrapped in unnecessary plastic!

now stores such as M&S charge you 40p for a paper bag that can barely stay intact to hold a bag of shopping, then 80p if you actually need a plastic bag that won’t disintegrate in the rain

absolutely ridiculous!

I think the idea is that one should try to avoid using more bags; and reuse bags wherever possible. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

We do take our own bags shopping with us and try to keep them clean and ‘in service’ as much as possible.

Buying loose fruit and vegetables is often less expensive than buying it packaged in plastic containers. Usually there are scales in the shop and/or at the till. If everyone refused to buy fruit and vegetables wrapped in plastic, things would change.

You can also leave the plastic behind in the shop, and put the fruit in your own reusable bag after paying for it.

I’ve started buying the apples, tomatoes etc that are sold loose in store. You really have to hunt for them though

I genuinely don’t think I’ve bought a bag since the 5p bag charge was introduced. I keep one string bag in my handbag. I keep a bag of shopping bags in the boot and put them back in after I’ve used them. If I forget them, I go to the boot and get them unless I can carry the stuff without a bag.

I used to work in a corner shop before the bag charges came in and idiots wanted a carrier bag for a pack of rizla.

Was outraged to be charged £1 in Waitrose 😀
Used it for weeks to get my money’s worth!

Op I'm terrible at remembering to cary a bag, never consistently use the same handbag, don't drive etc so could literally pen my own Bag for Life shop, so I feel your pain. But regardless of shops enjoying cashing in, the whole bloody point is to make people like me and you stop buying single use bags. I agree about fruit and veg etc but just choose to buy loose produce. Get some net bags you can wash.
You and I are the problem (hence I just buy BFL and then use them when I donate to the charity shop etc) not making single use plastic expensive

I don't understand why as it is the very definition of reuse

That's bizarre. I always send my donation in in bags for life. Then when my kids go "toy shopping" and I need a bag, they pay to have it back 😂

I’ve had two M&S and one Waitrose bags stolen from my trolley recently - all bags for life that were quite old as I no longer really shop in those supermarkets. It’s madness that people have got that desperate they’re now stealing shopping bags.
