was just in Morrisons and they have with Morrison card carrots , parsnips , turnip(swede) and brussel sprouts for 5p. All great quality looking as well. Bought some for me and some for elderly dad. I make a lot of soup so a frugal win . Thought I’d post as can help many people get their 5 a day at a great price

Love the idea of cheap veg soup. I'm a shocking cook though, would you mind sharing your recipe (even if it's a bung it all in one) @wornoutjeans? Thank you!

gamerchick · 18/12/2025 10:16

Did it actually work at the till this year? The discount wouldn't work at our store one year. They were full price.

wornoutjeans · 18/12/2025 10:35

Yeah it was showing up at full price when I scanned it . But when I scanned my Morrisons card the discount was applied

I've just bought two bags of carrots, parsnips, cabbage. swede, potato and sprouts all 8p each from Aldi, like you it'll probably all be made into enough soup to fill the freezer.

Unicornsarefluffy · 18/12/2025 10:58

Any soup recipes appreciated, thank you

caringcarer · 18/12/2025 11:01

I'm going over later to get mine. Also Lidl selling shallots too but I have not gone to see price yet.

This is a quick one, I am generous with the ground coriander. They have quite a few recipes on there.

It's also worth remembering that a lot of this veg lasts ages if stored well and you have the space. Plus at this time of year it doesn't necessarily need to be in the fridge, if you have an outbuilding or even in the boot of your car, or in our case some of our kitchen cupboards on an outside wall and away from the radiator are quite cool.

So you could buy enough to last you into January and use in soups, stews, curries etc as well as with your Christmas Dinner.

XenoBitch · 19/12/2025 03:32

Also a lot of meat is half price right now.

The shallots are incredibly good value - I bought lots last year and they lasted for weeks.

Potatoes and parsnips last longer if you take them out of their plastic bags because any moisture will encourage rot.

Broccoli and carrots should stay in their plastic because they benefit from moisture

Ohpleeeease · 19/12/2025 05:46

I bought loads last Christmas. No joke, we had parsnips from the freezer till November. There are loads of great recipes online OP. BBC Good Food is excellent and supermarkets also have a recipe section on their websites. Soups are easy and great to have in the freezer. You can use ziplock bags to freeze them flat in individual portions.

Ohpleeeease · 19/12/2025 05:50

Lidls selling potatoes, red cabbage, swede, carrots, parsnips and shallots for 5p per bag.
Tesco had broccoli for 15p and the leeks were 69p with a Clubcard.

Zanzara · 19/12/2025 06:11

Our favourite soup:

1 head of broccoli (leave out the stalks to avoid wind!)
1 medium carrot
2 potatoes
1 onion
1 to 1.5 vegetable stock cube*
2 pints water

Boil then blend and season to raste. Delicious with sandwiches or bread and cheese for lunch.

  • If you use a gluten free stock cube then this recipe is gluten free.

When do you all buy your veg for Xmas day I usually get it on 23rd when I pick up the pre ordered turkey

MrsCatE · 19/12/2025 06:36

Lentils are cheap and brilliant source of protein. Wash well and add a handful.

TashaG · 24/12/2025 12:54

Curried Parsnip Soup is another lovely one :)

Poor Aldi - they almost give away their veg at 8p a bag and then Morrisons and Lidl reduce theirs to 5p. All of that advertising that Aldi have been doing to draw customers' attention to the fact that their 'special bargain' veg is almost twice the price of that at least two other shops!

Bjorkdidit · 24/12/2025 13:11

But almost no-one is going to choose a shop based on a few pence like that. You'll just pick the most convenient one, or the one you like most, cheapest overall or more likely to have what you want in stock, not because you might save 20 p on a load of veg.

It's 5p at our Aldi.

Morrisons is giving away carrots for the reindeer. Like a proper supermarket scrap going on.

FishPie2 · 24/12/2025 13:14

Picked out the largest potatoes and cooked in electric pressure to freeze for jackets.
Done mash for freezer.
Made bubble and squeek for freezer and my tea today.
Pasta and veg soup. Will make chunky soups out of rest and yellow sticker chicken I got yesterday.
Brussels prepped and put in airtight box with j cloth and drip tray and they will keep for at least a week. Carrots in same kind of box.

It’s not that people will plan their shop based on cheap veg but more that if you can get them through the door for a bag of carrots they might stay long enough to see all the other stuff.

Tesco were doing that yesterday - giving away free loose carrots. It looked like they may have been their 'non-prime' stock; but even so, there was nothing stopping an adult from queuing up with the kiddies and grabbing a few handfuls.

Thought I'd share my easy soup "recipe", just in case it helps anyone.

Fry onion in a large saucepan/casserole dish/any saucepan.

Chop up, fairly small, any hard veg you have (eg carrots) and continue frying.

Chop up any other veg you have (literally ANYTHING) and add it, continue frying.

Add mixed herbs or any other herbs you have that you think might go well (oregano, basil, thyme etc) , bit of salt and pepper if you'd like.

Add enough boiling water to cover the veg you've cooked so it's all swimming around.

Add 1 or 2 stock cubes depending on how much water you've added.

Leave to simmer until it's all cooked.

When it's cooled* blend it all up (blender, stick blender, potato masher) or just blend a little bit to make it thicker - however you like it!

Season with more salt and pepper if needed.

Add milk or cream if you'd like.

Enjoy!

*it's much nicer to get splattered with cool soup rather than boiling soup. You will get a bit splattered.

What do you season it with and do you blend it when it's done?

A hint for when making a batch of soup to freeze is to not add the full amount of water - it takes less energy to cook and freeze and takes up less space. You can dilute it down when you heat it up to eat.
