I don’t home cook

I know not everyone will agree with me
I am not rich I am far from it. This year I dropped the guilt. This isn’t AIBU

once you count what your time and energy is worth and the fact you could be doing something else cooking and doing the dishes, meal planning and buying all the ingredients - and all the waste that goes in the bin when a takeaway is inevitably ordered because you’re tired and want something tasty - it’s cheaper and easier to just buy something ready made or easy food in the first place. You can get everything ready made now including sandwiches, soup, and family dinners like big lasagnes.

There’s an increasing amount of good quality ready meals that are as they would be cooked at home. They are pricey of course but some of them are really nice. Thinking of Cook, Ruby, Charlie Bigham, Field Doctor. You could do a lot worse than those (and I’d imagine a large proportion of the population do do a lot worse!)

Charlie Bingham is full of fat/butter

Yes, you can get it all ready made, but it's mostly horrible bland shite and full of crap. I cook because I want to eat really nice food, all the time. And I never batch cook, I would find it utterly miserable to reheat little plastic boxes from the freezer. There are loads of meals which only take half an hour.

Edited

I can't get on with batch cooking either. Things don't taste the same after freezing. I make what I have time for, maybe enough for the next day too as being in the fridge doesn't have the same effect on taste and texture.

I don’t get batch cooking. Maybe it’s because I’m already cooking for 6 plus leftovers but find it expensive and hard work, plus when I’ve tried to do a lasagne for example I always find despite doubling the ingredients I only end up with enough ragu for lasagne and a half!

Nothing wrong with either

I would argue that if you make your own food cooked from scratch, you know exactly what's in it. I'd rather take a bit of extra time cooking something healthy and nutritious than trusting the ready made meals that you can buy in the supermarket.

suburburban · 04/01/2026 13:25

I prefer to cook from scratch and I think it also cuts down on packaging and waste but you have to do what works for you.

i think it is healthier

I also like baking and agree it can be relaxing

I cook pretty much everything from scratch.

We own two takeaways in our family. One if a fish and chip shop so that’s not something that appeals that much and the other is a Chinese and once I saw the amount of salt and sugar that goes into the sauces I was not enthusiastic about having that too often either. Once every couple of months is enough.

Kirbert2 · 04/01/2026 14:23

I don't cook from scratch often. My son has a very limited diet and it is just a pain in the arse as well as struggling with having the time.

staringatthesun · 04/01/2026 14:35

How depressing. I love good food and there are very few takeaways that id consider to be tastier than the food we cook at home.
