Check the use by date on supermarket deliveries. You can get a refund for short dated items.

Just a quick reminder to check the use by date on your supermarket deliveries.
I know that supermarkets are supposed to highlight any short-dated items and then you can choose to accept them or not but it doesn't always happen.
If you do end up with unexpectedly short dates and you have already accepted your delivery you can call customer services and they should refund you for those items.
I just visited my niece and her new baby (he's gorgeous with very well developed lungs😁). Her Asda delivery arrived and she had a load of meat and milk dated tomorrow that she really has no use for. She genuinely didn't know she could call up for a refund. She is now getting a refund of over £20.
Suggestions of what to do with 12 pints of milk gratefully accepted.

I seem to recall that with Asda there's no need to call them, it can all be done with a few clicks online. With Tesco on the other hand you have to use WhatsApp, which is a bit annoying.

You can freeze milk. Freeze it in ice cube trays and they are perfect amounts for tea etc.

I phone Tesco if I have a problem with something I have delivered.

Who has space for 12 pints of milk made into ice cubes?

You done need to make it all into ice cubes but a tray of them is really handy. I ran out of milk so just defrosted some of the cubes for my coffee.

MintTwirl · 16/11/2025 14:22

Tbh I would just use the milk until it goes off. I find it can last for ages!

Ocado have a good policy regarding dates and they are categorised by use by on the receipt. Never had an issue or needed a refund, as they've probably realised it is cheaper to avoid the issue in the first place.

MintTwirl · 16/11/2025 14:23

I will say though I agree OP, I have been caught out by short dates on Sainsburys who are supposed to highlight them but don’t always.

You can request a refund online for Sainsbury's.

I know you can but I am saying that the OP is correct in that they don’t always highlight short dates and I have been caught out by that in the past.

Just freeze the milk in its carton. Defrost and use as normal. Same with the meat. Panic over.

Funny how this thread has turned up today as my DD at uni texted me yesterday asking if she could do just that at point of delivery. I said of course just tell the delivery person you don’t want it, and more often than not they’ll refund you and let you keep the item anyway - they can’t resell it after all. So she’s got four heads of lettuce with a use by date of tomorrow and is contemplating how much salad she can eat over a couple days!

This is nice and a good cheap student lunch

Lettuce soup is a fantastic way to use up lettuce – or salad leaves – that might otherwise be wasted. Lovely served hot or chilled for a light meal.

I find Tesco brilliant for dealing with this. There is a separate part on your receipt that is for short shelf life items. You can decline them at the door but often the driver says keep the item and you still also get a refund.

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure I've never had separate section on any of my Tesco receipts for that.

Roseshavethorns · 16/11/2025 19:13

Tesco do list short dated items if the system picks up on it but it's not unusual for it to miss things.

Thanks, I'll keep a look out for it, though given that it doesn't seem to have happened in the last 2.5 years of online shops I'm not overly hopeful! Maybe it's because my shopping comes from one of their automated picking centres rather than a regular shop.

I freeze milk quite often, just empty out a bit from the carton because it expands and give it a good shake when defrosted and it’s fine.

Also she could make Mac & Cheese, milkshakes, iced coffees, hot chocolate.

Freeze the meat too, portion up before freezing if needed.
