The jam making is done!

@BigSkies2022 pickles sound very nice. I’ve been making jam for so long now I don’t even see it as a big faff. Most have very few ingredients which I love.

spent €86 in Lidl but forgot to buy champagne so now I’m wondering why it cost so much!

Oh well done on the jam @pistachiosanscream it's so easily done a bit here and there and it all adds up πŸ™„

Yes @MaryGreenhill i think I weathered the grocery increases fairly well for a couple of years but now it’s very clear the budget probably has to increase. I did include some charcuterie for Christmas but this is normal for me at this time if year. I like to buy a few bits in the regular shopping that are solely for Christmas.

I’ve changed my shopping pattern and now shop more regularly than last year but it’s not making much of a difference as basics have gone up so much.

MaryGreenhill · 12/12/2025 07:48

I shop more regularly too @pistachiosanscream. l buy yellow stickers, use the freezer and compare the prices per kilogram on lots of things.
Prices jump up from week to week. I am comparing toilet rolls at the moment. I was buying Aldi for £4.99 but they have changed price this week and are now £5.25. l decided to shop around and try other types. Tried Aldi smaller pack that were terrible quality tbh so am trying Asda now. They are a bit better . What a subject though lol 🀣

The pickles are easy: you boil the vinegar with a bit of sugar and the peppercorns and salt and whatever spices you are including, you put the radishes/figs into a Kilner jar or Mason jar and you cover them with the flavoured vinegar. Voila!

frugal windfall yesterday: I closed a savings account and they sent me Β£760 in interest which I wasn’t expecting. So I have squirreled some of it away (it will be needed in January) but also earmarked some for gifts for DS, his girlfriend and the nieces. Also spent Β£48 on 3 tickets to see Pillion on Sunday night. Frugal fail because it’s also on at local fleapit for one third of the price, but it’s supposed to be fun for DH and DS as well as me, and they don’t like the fleapit. Bloody yuppies.

Frugal fail 2: Β£60 on a parking fine. I forgot to log on and pay later. Sigh.

Today I collect the bulk of my Christmas meat order, and will start the duck confit. The rest will go in the freezer until I am ready to cook. I will listen to some Handel and Vivaldi while I make the bourguignon and get in the mood!

Didn’t get any fairy lights up yesterday. Will see how today goes!

I like Zara Home very much- I have pillow cases, storage baskets, cushions and a very pretty marble side table which I saw featured in House and Garden and which looks much more expensive than it is. I haven’t tried their bigger pieces but they look great on the website.

Holidaysandchocolate · 12/12/2025 09:28

I seem to go to Tesco everyday at the moment. Although unusually, I haven’t gone there yet today. Will need to do the big shop later.

Woke up with awful headache and feeling sick. Think it’s hormonal. Joy of being in your 40s?!

Overnight I’ve hit Β£1k in eBay sales. Yay! As my reward today, I’m not going to list anything else πŸ™‚. Have already taken items to the post office this morning and have a couple of bits postbox size to post later.

Β£12.75 on M&S Chinese. DD1 requested it, and she goes away for a week tomorrow on a school trip.

needastrongoneagain · 12/12/2025 10:44

Morning.

Sorry - I’ve lost track of the thread this week. 94 year old DF has been stuck in hospital for over a month, he’s been ready for discharge for over a week now so getting moved from ward to ward. Getting the care home to go and assess him has been something of a challenge and managing his partners stress and anxiety (she’s in cognitive decline) has been a bit tricky. Anyway, after a calm, polite but very assertive conversation with the care home manager yesterday where I advised that no, they were not going to go and assess him β€˜hopefully’ next week, they are going this morning. As blunt as it is, their staffing levels are not my dad’s problem when they are still taking Β£5k a month. There’s also some other poor 90 year old in a corridor in A&E that needs his bed more.

Anyway - spending has been fairly conservative. I plan on wrapping presents this weekend and maybe checking if stocking fillers are needed anywhere and my DF has requested I get his partner some bits.

@BigSkies2022- I’m just picking up on the spends on health and personal expenses etc. I haven’t specifically tracked this spending, but I am going to do so as it’s an excellent idea. I spend very little on clothing and beauty, entertainment etc but an awful lot on fitness and running based expenses. And blood tests, supplements etc re health to facilitate my training and general longevity. It’s important to me and I’m happy to share. It probably won’t change anything, but interesting nevertheless.

Spending today
Β£125 ocado
Β£20 veg box.

lifelongfrugaleer · 12/12/2025 13:09

Sorry to hear about DF need but I agree there are times for polite assertive and that was it. Bet you don’t get the fees back either

Johaanah · 12/12/2025 14:35

Hi Guys,

Lsd for me today - just a few pounds in Poundland and a tenner in Asda. Yesterday was nsd.

Sorry to hear that your dad is having hard time getting discharged from Hospital @needastrongoneagain it must be quite stressful for you both, I'm glad you are able to advocate for him.

@MaryGreenhill I have a friend going through the same at the moment, she says it's so nice to have support during these difficult times.

I will join you all trying to wrestle with my health/weight and spending in the new year, I find that I can only do one at time as I need to fully focus. I'm not overweight - but, I have gained a fair amount of weight since the summer, although I was a little too thin I admit. Maintaining my weight is something that I really struggle with. I spend a lot on gym/fitness memberships and I do use them all, my personal spends - as in hair/beauty/clothes are also high, I'm OK with the beauty side of things as I've accepted that this is necessary, clothing I will really try my hardest to cut back on, I have an enormous amount of stuff and don't need any more, I must remember that!

Visiting dd in her uni town tomorrow, then we will get the train back home together for the Christmas holidays, I have already booked the tickets and will buy us both lunch tomorrow, shouldn't be too expensive.

MaryGreenhill · 12/12/2025 16:20

@BigSkies2022 Sounds like a wonderfully productive (if slightly spendy!) day 😊 and that surprise Β£760 couldn’t have come at a better time. Enjoy the Christmas prep, the confit, and the Handel/Vivaldi vibes… even if the fairy lights have to wait another day!

@Holidaysandchocolatebusy day already for you! Congrats on hitting Β£1k on eBay , that’s brilliant. Treating yourself to a listing free day is well deserved. Hope the headache eases off soon, and enjoy the M&S Chinese with DD1 before her trip bless her ☺️

@needastrongoneagainwhat a week you’ve had. Your DF must be fed up with all the ward moves, and you’re absolutely right to push the care home ,their staffing issues aren’t your dad’s problem when they’re taking Β£5k a month. Glad they’re finally assessing him today, and hopefully that frees up the bed for someone who needs it.
What a cheek they have happy to coin in the 5k for nothing in return.
You’re doing really well managing his partner too, especially with her cognitive decline it can't be easy for you πŸ’
Your spending sounds totally reasonable, and tracking it will probably just confirm how disciplined you already are. The Ocado and veg box will see you through, and wrapping presents this weekend is a good idea.
Hope things finally calm down bless you .

@JohaanahNice LSD today and well done on the NSD yesterday 😊
You’re right , support makes a big difference to someone when they are going through such a terrifying time .
The health/weight vs spending balance is tough, but you’re doing well using all your fitness memberships. Clothes sound like the easiest place to cut back if you’ve got plenty already.
Hope you have a lovely visit with DD tomorrow and a smooth trip home together. Enjoy your lunch!

Well, I think 2026 has got a bit more interesting, looks like we're moving house!
I don't want to necessarily I love our area but we would get a lot more support in the other area more family and it's my husband's city soo. I'm not against it and this post isn't a moan just not great with change.
Totally overwhelming the idea of selling the house too - I have too much junk!

MaryGreenhill · 12/12/2025 19:17

Blimey @ChipshopPickledEgg
I get why you’re feeling a bit wobbly about it , change is a lot to deal with, especially when you love where you are. But having more support nearby and being closer to your husband’s city does sound like it could make life easier in the long run .
Just take it a bit at a time , one drawer, one bag, one corner.
It’s not a moan at all, it’s just real life. You will get there ❀️

Ooohhhh @ChipshopPickledEgg this is big news. Congratulations on making a big decision and although a bit scary I bet the new area and more support will make it easier.
@needastrongoneagain I'm so sorry, that's so much to deal with and absolutely right on being assertive. How dare they treat you and your lovely dad (or anyone) like that. Take the money and not do the caring. Well done.
@Johaanah enjoy the weekend with your DD!
@Holidaysandchocolate your post about headaches and hitting 40s struck home. I've been wondering why for months I've been waking up feeling like I have a migraine brewing when I'm sleeping and eating and looking after myself better. Maybe it's age. Sigh
@BigSkies2022 I completely forgot to answer you I'm so sorry. Yes to sharing figures on spending on items such as clothes and health! I've never tracked things closely before but such a good idea. Normally it just ends up on the budget somewhere but this is a much better idea and I'm on board! How did the fairy lights go today?
@MaryGreenhill did you manage to do your presents and freezer? Hope you feel all sorted and on top of things now. You're always so organized.

Spends for me today Β£26 in a cafe as I treated DMum to lunch to say thank you for all she does. Food wasn't great so we didn't eat it, took it back to mine where we recooked it and it was much better. But the thought was there.
Also might be spending Β£25 on photos for Christmas gifts. Yet to press the button though.

BigSkies2022 · 12/12/2025 22:24

Pah! Still no fairy lights. Very slow errands this morning (post office, butcher, library, dry cleaners) followed by slow bus ride to flat (cleaning, admin registering appliances for warranties and insurance, replacing a window lock). Three buses home because the direct one had just vanished, in the manner of a child in Stranger Things. Rushed into Sainsburys to buy emergency pasta to avoid cooking, to find that DH had ordered Thai takeaway.

Spends: Β£70 butcher will likely spend another Β£25 when I pick up the ham.
Β£18 Sainsburys on lots of pasta and salads, which weren’t needed but can be frozen and set aside for a rainy day.

Early start tomorrow to take DS to work , so heading to bed soon.

Need- I sometimes think that if we had left Ddad in hospital last summer after his admission, and refused to sort anything out, he would have been a β€˜bed-blocker’, and social services would have had to get themselves in gear rather faster to assess him for residential/nursing care. We would have saved Β£15k, but he would never have reconciled himself to living in a care home, had he been stuck in a hospital ward. So it was for the best.

Is your DF in a nursing care home or residential? If the latter, they can be a bit hesitant if the needs of the resident have increased. They never want to say’We can’t really do what is required for this person,’ because everyone has an attachment to the status quo. So periods of stasis and indecision creep in, and it’s never clear at the time why the thing that should be happening, isn’t happening.

Obviously I don’t know if this is what is going on, but it may be that the home is not rushing to remove him from a hospital setting where they are better equipped to deal with any deterioration in your dad’s condition.

It’s pants though and you are right to insist they do their assessment right now, and not leave him as someone else’s problem by default.

I am enjoying Stranger Things, btw, only 3 episodes in. I am surprised by how violent it is: I thought it was more like ET, hence vanilla. Obviously hadn’t been paying attention! The performance by the child in playing Elle/11 is extraordinary, and her situation is so tragic and heart rending.

Two excellent books collected from the library today. I have had a cracking year of reading, including useful stuff for DS, for under Β£20. That’s supplied me with books for two reading groups, a newly published book purchased by the service at my request, lots of interlibrary loans, books recommended via podcasts and newspaper reviews, and books kept on extended/ renewed loans.

MaryGreenhill · 12/12/2025 22:37

Morning.

Johannah, travelling back from uni for Christmas with your DD sounds delightful. Enjoy the time together. Sounds like you get value from the gym and beauty spends but a bit less so clothes. Maybe a sort out before another purchase? I would not be that organised though in truth!

Change can be unsettling chipshop, I like a routine too, it makes me feel rather more in control. I agree with life, start to declutter now and be ruthless! It sounds like there are positives to moving to negate the sadness of leaving an area you love.

frugal that’s crap re the food. Did you raise it with the cafe?

Big spending day indeed Mary, but very well organised re the vouchers! DC definitely get to an age where money is simply more appropriate or buying them something that they specifically ask for - I wouldn’t dare try to buy clothes or sports items for either of ours these days.

Thanks for all the good wishes re DF. Big, he is in residential care, or rather was - the assessment showed that he now needs nursing care too, although it was staffing levels that held up said assessment (and another manager stepping into the situation with an entirely different approach..) I’m not in the least bit surprised, it’s no real exaggeration to say the only thing that works now is DF’s cognitive ability. So cue all of yesterday afternoon figuring the next move. No one guides you through this at all, DF’s partner would have been completely at a loss. I’ve left in place the social services referral that the hospital has already made to see if they can find appropriate provision but have contacted the affiliated nursing home his current provider has - which is close by - to negotiate a potential transfer. I await further details. This would be the preferred option, but I won’t know until Monday if there’s availability (they have availability but a current pause on admissions for dementia related ones due to numbers of new patients, but perhaps not so for nursing provision, particularly from their sister home). I’m stepping back a bit this weekend - my brother will help clear the existing room today (he’s great at taking instructions but not initiative is probably an apt summary). My other brother is fantastic but currently at the end of a long chemotherapy course so I’d rather he not get involved - he does want to though so may help re admin.

Anyway!!

Β£30 Amazon on an enormous fluffy jumper that I’d had in the basket forever and finally dropped to a price I was willing to pay.
I’ll need washing up liquid too.

Cod for supper with cauliflower caponata. I slept like crap last night as I ate pizza and drank a glass of wine far too late after an evening family visit that was pre planned weeks ago and I could have done without after the DF thing. Soft drinks and good food tonight will restore.

MaryGreenhill · 13/12/2025 10:45

That jumper sounds like a good buy @needastrongoneagainyou waited it out and Β£30 for something cosy you’ll actually wear is great πŸ‘
Cod and cauliflower Caponata sounds just lovely after a bad night’s sleep. Late pizza and wine will do that. Soft drinks and good food tonight sound just the job . Sorry your poor Dad has to change homes and that your Brother has had chemo . About time your luck changed as a family πŸ’

Morning!

Ocado came today and we handed back 99 bags, Β£9.90 returned! We give them all our soft plastic and it was weeks and weeks worth. Shopping was Β£110 so that made it Β£100.

I didn’t think that was too bad as it included steaks, onion rings, corn and chips for a nice dinner tonight after a light trail and an Oakham large chicken for tomorrow.

DH is out dropping off returns, regatta charges Β£2.95 for returns, which is annoying but the coat for ds was hugely reduced so worthwhile.

Today we are off to a light trail, we will take some snacks and only pay for a couple of ride tokens for the kids while we are there. Having the promise of steak baguette will get us safely out without dropping Β£50 on cold burgers or stopping at McDonald’s.

I have managed to avoid two McDonald’s this week, we’ve had multiple concerts, but noodles and toast and soup have been deployed from the cupboard instead!
