Help following partners heart attack

My partner has just had a heart attack, he’s only 48.
he’s recovering but I don’t know what is next - he cannot work for a while, I only work part time. We have no money, no savings, I feel like an idiot for not preparing for such a thing to happen. But how can you know at this age? im lost, we have no plan for this.

Is there no sick pay from his job?

Mumofsoontobe3 · 26/10/2025 14:56

Universal credit will support. Call them tomorrow. Check the entiltdoo website to see what financial support can be offered. I hope your DH recovery goes smoothly.

If he doesn't get sick pay then look to universal credit. Citizens Advice will help you navigate or you can use a benefits calculator: https://www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators

Benefits calculators

Find out what benefits you could get, how much you could get and how to claim

Like the others have said put in an application for UC, do you have children? Rent or mortgage?

We rent and have 2 children.

You need to apply for Universal Credit and that will then lead you to any benefits you can claim, such as rent and council tax etc.

Bjorkdidit · 27/10/2025 07:42

Definitely claim UC, with 2 DC, you working part time and renting the amount you will be entitled to isn't trivial so will help towards paying for essentials at least.

How old are DC? Is he well enough to look after them so you don't need to pay for childcare? Or if he's not, or they're very young you will get help with the cost of childcare and possibly a carers element.

Going forward will he able to return to work full time doing his current job? If not you need to plan for that. Can you work more hours and he do more at home?

Unless in temporary or emergency accom help with rent is delivered through UC. Council tax reduction is dealt with by the billing council and, at least in England, is a mish mash of schemes covering anything between all of the bill and barely half of it.

Are you married?

firstofallimadelight · 27/10/2025 19:02

You could see if he qualifies for pip while he’s recovering and if he does depending on your earnings you could potentially claim carers allowance.

It might be too early to claim for PIP, due to the 3 month past qualifying condition, and depending how the heart attack has affected ability to do activities/mobility- definitely speak to a benefits adviser first.

Very unlikely . Firstly there's a three month wait period then you have to reasonably expect that the problems would last for another nine months. Most people would not be struggling to wash and dress themselves/ mobilise/ cook a simple meal / communicate with others nine months after a heart attack.
