It’ll vary depending on area and your circumstances.

you should also get an automatic 25% off the bill if you are the only adult in the household.

yeah I already get the single person discount but I’m hoping that they can take more off as I have applied for an Ehp @MusicalCarbuncle

It depends on your local council’s approach to hardship and criteria for the fund. They might also have some sort of reduction scheme for people on low incomes, again this varies by council so look on their website.

Op if you contact your council and say you are having trouble painting paying they can sort out a payment plan for you.

MamaTo3under4 · 28/09/2025 09:15

@shellyleppardyeah I did that they said that I can pay £244 a month but there is no way I can afford that I literally run out of money every month as it is can barely afford to put the heating on, that’s why I’m hoping they can give me a Ehp to take some off of the overall bill but I’m wondering how much they usually take off x

You should get a 25% discount as a single person; that's universal.

The billing Council will have a Council Tax Reduction scheme for low earners.

Councils in England have a deal of flexibility about how they implement such schemes and most expect the occupier to contribute. Usually around 20% but in same places it's more.

Speak to the Council or check their website.

Have you applied for council tax relief? Depending on what your income is you may qualify for this tax relief on your council tax if you have a low income

the EHF is often done quarterly and there is a pot of money from the government and it is issued out to those in need, once the pot of money has gone - then its gone until the next quarter. You can often apply for the hep more than once but can't be relied on - its called DHP in my area but believe its the same benefit/pot of money

you will need to rearrange a special payment arrangement with the council on your council tax - as if you don't pay the £244 they are expecting it will trigger further processes. Although they don't like it - you could ask to go into next years payment as you just don't have the money to pay and not paying ends up with court charges etc

how come you don't get the tax demand until September - did you move home?
