Comparing Tesco receipts

I’ve just been looking at receipts from Tesco over the last 4 years. All from as near to this date as possible (so seasonal changes eliminated). Am really surprised. The cost of the butter we get has remained the same, as has smoked sausage. Milk has gone up by 6%, and Nescafé Azera by 7%. Pears and bread have gone down marginally.

The big shockers here are the vegetables: cucumber and peppers (up about 40%) carrots (up 50%), and celery (up 75%). It’s amusing to see that smoked sausage, kale and Azera are on offer more than once over the years.

No real point to this but I did find it interesting. I’m surprised I’m not paying more for butter and milk in comparison.

It is interesting. I remember back then the dairy farmers saying they couldn't afford to sell milk at that price.

Any bread that's half decent has gone up at least 50% - mainly because all those posh loaves are actually half a sliced loaf and about the same price as before. Such a massive con. Grrrrr

carrots were already cheap weren't they, so even if they double in price they're still cheap😁

things like cheese and yoghurt have gone up about 40%.

Fruit and veg is affected by the weather - pissed down last year so the crops couldn't be harvested - price increase, this year drought has been the problem - they will go up again

Coffee is struggling, those coffee growing counties are also suffering flooding

Cows are cows. Farmers are struggling already having to feed the silage they have in store for the winter months, so expect an increase in dairy come the spring. Already we are sending silage across the country and as silage stocks diminish , prices rise and that has to be passed on

Has your total spend increased by much OP?

The Tesco finest salted butter i love has definitely gone up. In fact, I think its increased since last week. I think it was £2.40 earlier this year, it's now £2.90. Its about the only premium product I buy, and only a couple of times a month, so I may stick with it. I'm sure milk has gone up a little too.
I think, if youre prepared to swap and change brands, shop for deals etc, you can keep your prices down. But my shopping bill has definitely increased lately.

But Anchor Butter has also shrunk by 25%. I think in 2020 it was £1.80 for 250g it is now £2.60 for 200g.

Mince has gone up a huge amount. Bolognese used to be a cheap go to for a midweek tea but now it's about £7!!

I always bulk ours with a tin of lentils and extra veg now, like grated myshrooms, carrots, two tins of tomatoes, sweetcorn, frozen peppers. I then remove some, flavour eith chilli spices and add tinned beans in taco/chilli sauce. Makes the pack go further. I shouldnt have to, but its probably healthier either all the extras added anyway.
