We have a joint account that we both pay into for bills, child expenses etc and our own separate accounts too. We pay separately for our cars and mobile phones but club together for extra expenses like holidays. He pays more into our joint account as he earns more

Much like @granhands1 I think. Our salaries are paid into our own accounts then the agreed amount is immediately (by standing order) paid into joint account and anything else left is ours to do what we want. DH earns a bit more than me so his is £1900pm and mine is £1600pm. I have about £300 left each month and DH £600. He would never see me short and he tends to pay more often for meals out, on holidays, house purchases etc but roles have been reversed with me significantly out earning him in the past so know this works and we can trust each other not to take advantage.

our joint account is for all regular household bills and includes both mobiles and car insurance plus used to pay off our monthly credit card we use solely for household & grocery shopping (Tesco card to collect points). When children were younger is included childcare and would cover any child related purchases like uniform and clubs.

No joint accounts here. We just split the bills according to our position at the time. Historically DH paid the mortgage, I did shopping and holidays. Now I do mortgage and he does bills. Holidays is whoever is feeling most flush.

Petrol etc is whoever is going by. If one is running short, we mention it and we decide if we cut back for a few weeks or if the other one transfers money.

Ultimately we have fairly similar spending priorities (but savers) so it works. I think it would be a disaster with one more inclined person to spending than the other.

Same as @granhands1 but we have one car so that's joint.

Our savings and investments are also fully joint (not separate) so we have full visibility there too.

Upsetbetty · 01/09/2025 20:22

We both pay the same into a joint account-1300 each for all bills.
he does earn a bit more but I insist on paying my half.
I have about 2200 leftover and he has 2800 so not a huge difference.
we pay our own car and fuel costs. He will pay mostly for dinners when we go out as he has that bit more leftover.

This. Although cars are now a joint expense, they used to be separate. We each pay an equal amount into the joint account. I earn a bit more but my outgoings are higher (commute, student debt) so it evens out.

We're pretty much the same as you. No joint accounts. One of us pays mortgage, insurance, water, kids phones and Virgin package. The other pays food, electric, gas and uni top-up for one DC. It works out roughly equal, or at least seems fair. We both run our own cars at our own expense.

Passthecake30 · 04/09/2025 12:56

We have a joint account where all bills and kids stuff comes out of - we both put in £1.5k, and have about £1.5-£2k in left each. When dp was out of work, I put in more, and when I was on maternity leave, dp put in more. We pay halves for holidays.

HollyhockDays · 04/09/2025 13:04

We have our own bank accounts. We get paid into our own bank account. I pay for food, kids stuff, dog related stuff, my health insurance, petrol for my car and my own clothes, hair et cetera. I also pay for broadband my phone DS1’s phone. We do not have a mortgage. DH pays for electricity gas and rates. Currently he pays for holiday flights and accommodation and we split other costs.

RuthChrisSt · 04/09/2025 13:21

No joint account. We divvyed up the bills and he pays half of them and I pay the rest. It works out about equal, we earn around the same. I pay the mortgage out of my account, he pays me his share (50%). Food/entertainment/days out etc we take in turns, both of us pay our own car maintenance/fuel costs.
