Tesco price hike

I’m sure there’s many things that have shot up however this is the biggest rise I’ve seen recently. Every week I buy a bag each of frozen blueberries and frozen cherries. For as long as I can remember each bag has been £2.50. I have just been doing my usual online order for delivery later this week and they are now £3 each! I checked my receipt for Saturday, just two days ago they were both still £2.50. I can’t believe a price can increase by 20% in days. Anyone else noticed such a huge price hike from one week to the next?

I've realised today that ive been priced out of Tesco .. The prices are wild . Its so sad because i really like to shop there but i can not justify giving them 35% of my wages every month for them so bugger me .

Are freddos now 4 per pack not 5? Or am I imagining there used to be more in each pack ..

Edited

Yes, you are right. It used to be £1 for 5. Now £1.20 for 4 😐

Two finger Kit Kats used to be around £1.89 for 9, they’re now £2.20 for 8.

Oh, I think I might be the same 😬

What to do though, I get so confused if I don't do it online or even worse if I had to get different things from different shops.

My budget is so tight that, weirdly, I feel scared to shop differently.

Food inflation was second story on BBC news this morning.

Our plum tree only had 8 plums this year unfortunately, we did have loads of figs though, probably all the sunshine. Victoria plums are in the shops at the moment, price not too bad.

Where are you? I'm in Hertfordshire and we had our best harvest ever of Mirabel plums this year. We've had thousands and it is only a dwarf tree.

mylovedoesitgood · 27/08/2025 23:36

Like a PP says, the only way to beat it is to shop around but I appreciate some people can’t. I don’t go in my local Tesco, I just can’t justify spending more for what I want there when I can get the same items cheaper at Asda or Sainsbury’s even though those two supermarkets are further away. Home Bargains and B&M are great and I have them an 20 minute walk away - wish there were more stores around the country. It’s £2.90 for a double pack of McVities Digestives at B&M, for example.

Caspianberg · 28/08/2025 05:33

I don’t think it’s lack of eu subsidies. I live in EU country and our food is easily double or triple Uk prices still.

We have a smaller population so can’t buy on mass discounts, more food is organic or local (or in country) sourced. But local costs far more than strawberries from Peru or whatever as higher local wages.

Almost every item I would say is now €5 on average. So 10 item shop will be around €50. Obviously some items are cheaper, but some a lot more. Meat, fish, cheese is very expensive. 1 litre milk is €1.89 which hasn’t actually increased in ages so one of the cheaper items.

In summer we grow almost all our our own fruits, veg and salad. Saves a small fortune. I only buy things like bananas or some other things we might fancy occasionally. I fill freezer with garden produce to reduce what we have to buy in winter also ( many things like squash/ potatoes last months just left whole in cupboard also).
Also make as many basics a possible ie pizza is far cheaper to make than buy

Viviennemary · 28/08/2025 05:39

I saw on TV the other day harvests are bad. So that's probably the reason. Also I'm sure there used to be 5 in packet of Freddos. Now 4. How sneaky.

fateisdestined2025 · 28/08/2025 05:43

Not sure what’s going on in my local Asda. Prices are dancing about up and down. Milk was 2.15 then 2.20 then 2.45 then 2.47 and now back to 2.45. Online it’s 2.40

ive started baking these past 2 weeks and making my own wraps etc

I always shop around and buy supermarket basics but honestly it’s getting ridiculous now

Empress13 · 28/08/2025 05:44

Ageee OP and don’t get me started on the price and size of whole chicken! The large are tiny nowadays and nearly £6! TBH I did buy a large 1kg bag of frozen wonky fruit yesterday for £1.99 which I thought was good in Tesco.

In Sainsbury’s. Big box of Maltesers was £6.90, and the little box that used to be a pound is now £3.25!

Hear you. Used to to get a big box for 4 pound sometimes 5- no more🙄

chinupoldchap · 28/08/2025 06:11

I’ve noticed this too, our weekly food shop is easily £160 a week. It has become our biggest expense. I thought I was being careless with shopping but I meal plan, shop around, cook from scratch and it still was going up. Things weren’t lasting long enough, packet sizes getting smaller which meant buying more or returning to shops. This week I have gone straight back to basics, cooking everything from scratch, making bread at 81p a loaf compared to £1.15 for the equivalent, bagels 81p for 12 compared to £1.90 for 5. Yes the energy costs are not factored but I am already cooking for dinner so trying to be clever with it. I stopped buying ‘snacks’ and making my own, biscuits, cakes, popcorn, etc And my food shop this week was around £90. I appreciate not everyone has the time, skill or equipment to manage this but it works for us

sparrowhawkhere · 28/08/2025 06:47

time is an issue for a lot and we end up paying more for convenience. I need to be more organised about buying toiletries from b and m, stockpiling toilet rolls etc.

spoonbillstretford · 25/08/2025 23:44

Exactly! And surely while it's a difficult year for brassicas, it is a bumper year for some fruit? I'd never seen so many plums on our tree and everyone's fruit trees in the allotment are incredibly full. Also the local vineyard is harvesting a few weeks early, absolute bumper crop.

Cherries and blueberries are luxuries though. Soft fruit is expensive because of growing and packing carefully etc.

Fruits like apples, oranges, bananas are far better value. And the bag of frozen summer fruits, or mixed berries is much cheaper.

Northamptonshire, so not too far away from you, we had a very good crop last year and other years so don't know what happened, they are Victorias. Our figs and raspberries have been excellent and we have had loads, I made some fig jam. Maybe the plum tree will be better next year, DH did spot another 3 plums yesterday.

That's strange. We had hardly anything in the last few years but this year has been off the scale.

My next door neighbor had a Victoria plum tree which had a bumper harvest just like ours tand then it gave up all together. So I hope that's not going to happen to our tree.

Yes, we were talking about buying frozen berries.

The only way to beat this in a way is to shop around. I do a farm food shop ever couple of weeks, lunchbox snacks, milk, sauces and laundry and cleaning bits are all quiet cheap. Milk is 2 for 2 quid
In Tesco I buy own ) value brands a lot.
We've cut right back on chocolate and I bake a lot more now.
It's really hard for so many.

Totally agree with this. Farmfood & Home Bargains first point of call for staples and lots of things.

Using all the apps & loyalty schemes (×2 if you have a partner). Check Trolley.co.uk for best prices & use hotukdeals for offers.

I get the best value out of apps etc via nectar and lidl.

Plus if your employer has a staff discount / benefit etc scheme, use it to buy discounted gift vouchers for ALL your spending.

Tesco take the piss! My coffee in Tesco is £8 a jar
on B&M it’s £6.74 . Both are making a profit but one is absolutely taking the piss

check that they are exactly the same size - B&M often have different size packs of stuff so although it appears cheaper it is the same price per 100g. For example the pringle pots are smaller at 165g as opposed to 185g in all the supermarkets - not a huge noticable difference but people only compare the price not the weight!

sciaticafanatica · 29/08/2025 12:27

@BrieAndChillithey are identical

Monstermissy36 · 29/08/2025 12:29

Ohh they have reduced the size of kerrygold butter from 250g to 200g still expensive though and I’m so annoyed… making stuff smaller is not cool Tesco!

MidnightMeltdown · 29/08/2025 12:31

I don’t think that this is unusual. They’ve probably just negotiated a new price with the supplier. If the supply cost has jumped, they will obviously increase the cost to the customer.

shellyleppard · 29/08/2025 12:33

Morrisons eggs went up 10 pence in a week....

Chocolate has increased massively.

The price of cocoa is at an all time high due to poor harvests

Malteasers are fucking outrageous now!

Bag with 13 in coat £1.25 in our local Tesco.

And Walkers Baked Crisps. The packet is now so small I’m struggling to get my hand in properly. And the few ( very few) crisps are nestled in the bottom corner.
