How much would you expect a medium pasty to cost?

WonderingWanda · 21/08/2025 13:51

I can't remember the last time I had a pasty but I just bought a medium one and it was nearly £5. No real lumps of meat in it either even though it was meant to be a steak pasty. 2 pasties, a sausage roll and 3 waters was £19. I know the col has gone up but I am still pretty shocked!

It depends where you're buying. In my local small chain bakery a large handmade "cornish" style pasty is about 3.50 but I'd expect to pay more in a city or a train station for example.

Saponarium · 21/08/2025 13:55

I was going to say £4.50. £5 doesn't surprise me.

Snorlaxo · 21/08/2025 13:58

I was going to say a fiver until you mentioned no steak inside which is piss poor. I’m also making assumptions on what medium means. I believe that a Tesco meal deal has gone up to £3.85 today (premium £5.50) and I’m assuming that the pasty is better quality than something like Gingsters.

DiscoBob · 21/08/2025 13:59

In Greggs, I think about £3?
In a posher cafe about a fiver?
In a train station etc probably a fiver as well but I'd expect it to be much lower quality.
In a corner shop, about £2?

But this is London prices...

We can't give an informed opinion unless you tell us where you were buying it.

A toursity town? A train station? Your local Greggs?

WonderingWanda · 21/08/2025 14:05

It was a Warren's bakery in Devon, it wasn't even very good. I just thought it seemed especially expensive for around here. I will do some research when in Cornwall next.

In Devon, at Trago to be specific (which is an absolute dump and usually cheap).

Warrens pasties are shite. Always have been. I worked as the Saturday girl in Pz in about 1994 and they were dreadful then too 😂

So no, it doesn't surprise me.

A decent steak pasty from Philps or Bakers is around £4.50.

WonderingWanda · 21/08/2025 14:11

I think it might have been acceptable if it had some actual steak in it....seemed to have steak dust in it instead.

We have a pastie shop near us - eat in or takeaway - and a traditional one is £5.50. But they are delicious and I have no problem paying out for one.

DH and I went to a local cafe the other day; one cupcake, one stale croissant and a mediocre scone with a coffee and a tea and it was £17. It seems like a lot but if you break it down it's not really. Though it's always disappointing when the quality is bad! We won't be going back there.

Bjorkdidit · 21/08/2025 14:14

I'd be more annoyed by the cost of the water, or not as I wouldn't buy it in the first place.

We'd either make do with one between 3, have water with us, buy a big cheap bottle for under £1 from a supermarket or do without.

From those prices, it looks like you've spent
about £6 on water, which I just couldn't do.

StrongasSixpence · 21/08/2025 15:39

In my local train station £7.99!

The good places locally about £4.50 with decent meat. Posh artisan type places maybe £5-6 but nice. I actually prefer the veggie pastries from the posh delis as I find the meat ones very oily and rich.

catsareace · 21/08/2025 16:02

DD is a poor Uni student and text me a few weeks ago to say she had been robbed at Birmingham train station. I was panicked until she told me she was robbed by the pastie shop - £7. I guess you do pay more at trains stations but yeah the cost of everything these days makes my eyes water.

ReightYorkshire · 21/08/2025 16:14

I remember when, with a ten bob note in your pocket, you could buy 10 fags, a quarter of a pound of liquorice allsorts, two oranges, visit the pictures in town, come home on t'bus and still have change in your pocket for the collection plate on Sunday.

Bottled water in the UK is almost as outrageous as the reaction you get when asking for tapwater, in a country with some of the cleanest tapwater in the world.

There is something desperately wrong with the situation where a half litre bottle from a vending machine in Dubai airport is AED 4 (a little over 80p) but you cannot buy a bottle of water of any size in Manchester airport for less than £2.99.

Personally, I'm at the stage where I prefer to go hungry than support some of these prices.

DinoLil · 21/08/2025 16:23

I'm sorry, but I read this as a 'medium party' and I was thinking who the heck would hire a medium for a party?! 🤣🤣🤣

Radiatorvalves · 21/08/2025 16:29

It’s why I like France… croissants for €1. And I agree bottled water costs are terrible but I also don’t like the single use plastic. I try to ask for refills of my bottle. In France you often get drinking water fountains. In airports here but not universal.

Wishiwasatailor · 21/08/2025 16:37

I find Trago food outlets overpriced. Try helluva pasty's by hatt lay-by on the callington road medium pasty is 4.70 but meaty and delicious!

GleisZwei · 21/08/2025 16:42

It depends on a few things - local/smaller bakery vs somewhere like Greggs, train station vs posher high st vs standard high street, warm v chilled....

Tgan · 21/08/2025 19:33

From Pz living in Manchester.

I got desperate the other day and bought one from the Pasty Company in Picadilly £8.50 for a large that was more like a pixie pasty 🙄

was not impressed at all

Arsed · 21/08/2025 19:36

From Tesco £1
From somewhere posher £4 which I could accept but any more than that, I’d find a Tesco.

Hi! I live in Cornwall. Medium pasties are the best part of a fiver in most places. Large steaks are almost £6 now.

Warren's are a bit naff these days. Try Niles or Barnecutts when you're here

TheChosenTwo · 21/08/2025 19:47

I think I paid £14 for 2 large pasties the other day, quite nice but 3 bits of steak in mine (they were big chunks and it felt quite traditional really, I don’t ever remember a traditional Cornish pasty being overly generous with the beef).
I can’t get over the previous person saying they would share a bottle of water between 3 people but then they don’t have the same family members as me, ds would leave more pasty floating in the water than he’d eaten 🤮
id sooner dehydrate than share drinks though! And do usually carry my own but will buy a sportscap one if I’m caught short without one and reuse it for months until it dies.

LuckyCharm9 · 21/08/2025 19:50

If you are ever in Launceston try Philip Warrens. Amazing pasties and sausage rolls! Their pork baps with stuffing and crackling are good too.
