How much a week on food for 3 adults

Sorry I know it’s been asked before but usually for a family of 4. We are a house of 3 adults, me and 2 adult dc, we have no pets to feed, 2 of us are lactose free so milk and cheese is a bit more expensive and one DD has sensory issues with food so doesn’t always eat the same as me and dd2. Dd1 has just returned from uni, dd2 home from school/college. My shopping bill seems to have doubled and we are probably eating out once a week.

I am spending around £80 on a big shop and probably topping up £20-£30 during the week with bread, milk and fruit. I don’t buy much veg as we have an allotment. I cook from scratch every day, eat out once a week. Is £100 a week average for a family of 3?

I would say that is about right

Thank you. Dd1 starts work next week so I’m hoping she will start paying towards food. I was just worried I was over spending but I don’t think I can spend much less.

yes that sounds right to me OP.

It's probably average. I'm one adult, 2 older teens (one with afrid) and spend £60-70 every 10 days. However im on a very tight budget so needs must. I meal plan every meal and batch cook, make own cakes, lemon curd, meals from scratch, buy in bulk or when things are on offer etc. So if needs must it can be done cheaper but it takes work.

2 adults here. We spend around £100 a week. We meal plan and always shop with a list and generally stick to it.

Meadowfinch · 01/08/2025 12:39

Seems about right. I spend £60 a week for me and an endlessly hungry 17yo boy.

I'm on a budget, shop in Tesco, cook from scratch and so buy a lot of basics, meat, veg, fruit, dairy. No ready meals or takeaways

NoEffingWay · 01/08/2025 20:17

My bill is about £120 a week for me, DH and DS (13). We eat about 95% of our meals at home, and I work from home, so I don’t think that’s too bad?

DaisyChain505 · 01/08/2025 20:22

£60 for two adults. That’s without toiletries etc as they’re purchased from boots/superdrug.

I food shop at Aldi. I’m veggie DH isn’t.

I wrote up my meal plans and buy exactly what’s needed.

We don’t eat any unhealthy snacks like crisps and biscuits so no extra crap on top.

NewbieYou · 01/08/2025 20:34

Well if a person has moved home and another is now eating an extra meal at home every week of course it’s doubled… that’s almost exactly doubled (except breakfast for college DD - it’s an additional 28 meals a week + 21 for you (63 meals total) vs before being 35 meals total.

I'd make child who is starting work pay a contribution. U say she has just returned from uni. She will know food costs money as she has had to cater for herself. Perhaps ask her what she was planning on contributing ? Even if you can afford to keep her, thats not the point IMO.

BCBird · 01/08/2025 20:39

I spend about 80 to 90 a week. Just me. No alcohol. Don't really budget. Food my one vice

Silverbirchleaf · 01/08/2025 20:40

I pay £100-£130 per week on my shop for three adults .

ViciousCurrentBun · 23/08/2025 16:18

We spend around £100 to £120 per week, 3 adults and a very small cat. That’s no alcohol, DH buys some very occasionally. We are not snackers.

CKN · 23/08/2025 16:27

That’s about average.
That works out at about €33 per person per week and would obviously include breakfasts, lunches and dinners plus cleaning products.
sounds very reasonable to me

mamaduckbone · 23/08/2025 16:36

That sounds about right. We spend similar for me, Dh and ds16. The way the pp put it - £33 pp per week - makes it actually sound pretty reasonable.

idontknowhowtodreamyourdreams · 03/09/2025 14:00

Roughly right, I'd say.

We are two adults and three kids (one teen, two younger). All in, including some cleaning products and laundry tabs etc, we spend about £130.
