Never. I am honestly tired of working non stop and no treats, little "luxuries " in life. Bl**dy Kinder chocolate was £1.50 last Friday, today £1.65. Everything goes up constantly and it all adds up.

Badbadbunny · 16/07/2025 22:31

Never. Prices are going to rise every time minimum wage goes up due to cost push inflation. They’re going to rise when benefits and pensions rise due to demand pull inflation. Business costs rise when utility and fuel prices rise. It’s never ending.

ChickenEggs028 · 17/07/2025 11:40

Yep it sucks. Payrise of 2% this year less than inflation

DS is on holiday, so while I don't need to drive him to the school bus stop, I'm cycling to work two days a week to reduce petrol use.

I've given up on shop bread completely. I like real wholemeal bread with a crust which is very expensive, so now I order a sack of flour direct from the local mill, and make my own. It works out at £1 a large loaf and is much nicer.

I'm growing my own salad, tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers, chillies and beans, and am busy clearing a patch of garden ready for autumn planting.

I make my own jam, chutneys, cakes and liqueurs, bottle fruit, Make my own chilli sauce.

Staving off the price increases, I've turned into my mother

AlpineMuesli · 22/07/2025 11:14

@Meadowfinch you're so lucky to have a garden.

It just feels like everyone is lot poorer than 15 years ago

Cleanthatup · 22/07/2025 14:55

Yeah it’s so depressing at times. I found an old P60 from 2017 when cleaning out some drawers the other day. I am on the same wage now as I made a side ways career move a few years ago.

it made me think twice about my current situation that’s for sure. Wages here are stagnant and unless I start to climb the ladder (unlikely as I am a female in a male dominated industry) I will probably never see a clear month when I think.. oh that was ok money wise!

AlpineMuesli · 22/07/2025 15:37

Water monthly DD went from £40 to £73 today. The board got their bail out bonuses though.

Lol. Do you have a pool for your shark or does it just jump from hillock to hillock?

Food price inflation climbed for a fifth consecutive month, up from 4.9% in July to 5.1% in August, with small increases in a range of vegetables, cheese and fish items. The price of chocolate rose by 15.4%, while the cost of beef, butter and coffee also increased sharply.

It's really getting me down as well. The goalposts keep getting moved further and further away. I don't expect a luxury lifestyle but I'd like the odd little luxury. A meal out or tea and cake at a café now and then. Our factors bill came in today and they want almost £200 for nothing I can see. We're trying to organise a short break in the UK but it's all eye wateringly expensive.

Wages are just way too low to pay for the cost of things now and we need a reset, either prices need to come down or wages have to go up. We're all being shafted as it is.

Blackbookofsmiles1 · 17/09/2025 21:55

Wages need to rise considerably higher. Yes I know that means prices will rise, but let’s face facts here, prices have risen sharply over the years, even with wages stagnating FOR OVER A DECADE!

Adjusted for inflation, they haven't risen since 2008 - so 17 years - closer to two decades than one now.

Food prices feel more like 20% to me tbh. In Lidl, the tunnocks wafers were £1.75 the other week. This week - £2.25!

I'd like a little whinge please. Sainsbury's want £1.60 for a tin of button mushrooms this week.

I swear there's gonna be a scurvy epidemic in 5 or 10 years' time where people just refuse to pay stupid prices anymore - even those who can easily afford to pay them.

It is ridiculous. Unless you're in certain categories (pensioners, benefits claimants and 'low paid') then governments just don't seem to care. Tax bands frozen for eternity, mortgage/rent up, food prices, utilities, council tax all up. But mysteriously salaries get 2% if you're lucky, unless you're on minimum wage.

Fed up with it.

MPs salaries are going up 5% in April.

We have stopped going to restaurants. Unlikely, we will eat at one this year. We used to go at least once a month.
