What do you refuse to pay for now that the prices have got so high? I refuse to pay for a family holiday abroad due to the cost seeming not worth it. I also wont pay the prices for a used car now so walk or bus everywhere. Wondering what else people have given up?

What do you consider not expensive for a family of 5 for eg? Most things i have saw are about 1k per person and in places i wouldn't want to go like egypt or turkey. I dont think 5k for a week anywhere with kids is worth it. Thats before spending money too.

Eating out, will only do it for special occasions and only if we know the food is really good.

Daisy12Maisie · 13/07/2025 07:22

I don’t get my nails done. Pay to go to the hairdressers and I don’t get my eyelashes tinted. I would love to do this but I can’t justify it as it would be paid for out of my overdraft so not possible.

BertieBottsEveryFlavourBeans · 13/07/2025 07:54

Going to restaurants/fast-food/takeaways.

We earn more than we ever have before (not a brag, we still don't earn a great amount!) but have never felt poorer. We used to eat out regularly, things like a cafe lunch, takeaway maybe once a week and we never felt like it was a struggle.

Now I make sure a day out involves a picnic or outings don't fall over meal times, and our takeaway is now a fakeaway, usually a slightly fancier than usual pizza. I just can't justify spending half my weekly food budget on one meal.

I've also started cutting my own hair (and it turned out exactly how I wish the hairdresser could do it but never did!) I only ever went to Supercuts but it was still just under £50 for a wash cut and blow dry.

I have even convinced DD to let me cut her hair at the start of the summer holidays, on the understanding that if I fuck it up we will go to a hairdresser to get it fixed!

shirtyshirt · 13/07/2025 08:01

I wouldn't spend 5k plus on a week holiday in Egypt or Turkey.
We have really cut back on eating out, l don't mind paying more for nice food but standards seem to have slipped. I'd rather buy nice food from Waitrose/butchers and make stuff at home.

Seaside3 · 13/07/2025 08:28

There's plenty of cheaper holidays abroad, its something I'm not willing to give up!
We have cut back on eating out, eat at home and then a coffee or ice cream out.
Haircut / dye . I do mine at home as £100 for one seems excessive and I'm not always happy.
Cut back on meat consumption too.

Wheech · 13/07/2025 08:32

I never buy snacks or drinks when I'm out any more. Sometimes I go to pick up a bar of chocolate or packet of crisps and then can't bring myself to pay the extortionate price. Probably not a bad thing.

Grainsandgains · 13/07/2025 08:34

Takeaways.
Have you seen prices of KFC and such? Fucking hell. I get prices had to go up but... Wow

Badbadbunny · 13/07/2025 08:40

Eating out, buying drinks/snacks on the go, etc.

I now take things with me in my bag, ie a couple of drinks, a few snacks etc., if we’re in the car for a day out or travelling for a short break, I take a flask and homemade sandwiches.

Cant justify paying for a lunch to go or meal deal or fast food any more when I can take my own for a fraction of the cost.

We now actually eat in on holiday too - we used to eat out all the time even if we were in a self catering apartment/cottage, home or abroad, but now we mostly eat in and only go out for the occasional meal maybe a couple of times in a week.

Yes. I am aware. As I said I know prices had to go up. Still doesn't stop me being quite shocked at price of their value buckets

WompWompBoom · 13/07/2025 08:49

I still prioritise my holidays abroad, and watching ice hockey live so keep buying tickets for that.

I've absolutely cut back on takeaways though, I used to have two a week and now it's lucky if it's two a month, I was finding the costs had massively gone up, quality and portion sizes had gone down. Even a Maccys is now £15-£20 for two of us and it's just not that great.

It’s really easy and cheap to tint your own eye lashes.

We haven’t bern abroad for years, its just too expensive. We holiday in the uk and have seen some lovely places.

roses2 · 13/07/2025 08:57

A decent quality takeaway in my area is £15-20 per person. Used to buy twice a month but now cut back to once every 2 months as it’s £70-80 a go for us.

ViciousCurrentBun · 13/07/2025 08:57

I would sacrifice everything if I had to so I could still go on holiday. Objects or services of any description that I don’t need to stay alive would just not be bought at all.

Where would your price limit be for a week for 5 ppl anywhere? I used to travel alot before kids but the prices now coupled with the stress of taking kids has me thinking its not worth it.

I paid £1.05 for a packet of Walker's crisps the other day. Couldn't believe it! We used to have a coffee and a snack at the end of each dog walk, but it's just so expensive now, we've cut back to two a week.

KnickerlessParsons · 13/07/2025 09:13

I rarely buy meat. It’s not worth the cost.
if I do buy meat I get it from the butcher. It’s more expensive but it goes further as I’m not paying for all the water that’s pumped into supermarket meat.

LF11 · 13/07/2025 09:15

Eating out is extortionate but I still do it but maybe not so often.
Never pay full price for clothes, accessories etc. There is always a sale or a promotion on if you wait. Hobbs regularly gives 15% off. Use a Blue Light card.

Seaside3 · 13/07/2025 09:19

@Myusername19 I'd highly recommend taking your kids to something like eurocamp in France. A static caravan really doesn't need to be expensive, and once you're there, all the activites/entertainment is included. They all have swimming pools too.
You don't need to eat out, and days can be spent on site, at the beach or exploring. I discovered early on that going on a holiday that suits the kids means you get a holiday too.
We are going peak season and a 3 bed caravan was about £1400 i think, for 2 weeks. We are travelling a bit after too, ao all in, with travel etc it will be in the region of 2k. I don't count food/eating out as we would do the same here.

shirtyshirt · 13/07/2025 09:22

@Myusername19 we like holiday parks like the below in France plus I have family with homes in France & Spain so that makes me somewhat reluctant to spend more for less.
