Has anyone sold jewellery?

I’m a bit short of cash and I have a gold and emerald ring and necklace that I’m considering selling. Does anyone have any experience of this or recommendations as to how to go about it?

Auction is your best bet, search for auction houses in your area and take the pieces for appraisal.

Auctions will charge commission to you as a seller and then again to the buyer, so they will expect to get it for less.
Go to a jeweller who buys gold. I have sold a lot of inherited jewellery in the past.
They will weigh it and give you a price based on the daily value of the gold for scrap, depending on the carat. The price of gold fluctuates each day, but at the moment is heigh. It is rare for a jeweller to buy an item to resell unless it is particularly valuable or by a designer. They usually disregard the stones, as most retailers use low value stone, even diamonds. The price difference between buying and selling jewellery is considerable and often a shock.

High!

I wouldn’t bother with an auctioneer as you (as the seller) will pay between 20-25% of the hammer price for them to sell your jewellery.
Try a local jewellers.

It really depends on what the ring and necklace are like, in terms of whether they're worth more than the scrap value or not. Could you post a pic? I collect vintage and antique jewellery and have sold a lot of pieces on both eBay and Etsy (I used to have a small Etsy shop).

Try Hatton jewels 5 Hatton Pl, London EC1N 8RU. I found them excellent, you can email them and post your stuff.

Hi there, thanks for all responses. To be honest, they are not high value. I took them to a high street chain that buys gold the other day and they confirmed they wouldn’t give anything for the stones. They said they would give around £100 for the gold, so not really worth bothering about. Just thought it’s lay unworn for years and if I could have got a bit more for it I would have sold it.

You’ll get a better price selling jewellery on EBay
