Beware of online grocery shopping at Sainsburys

Be aware that if you place an online grocery order it's likely that you will not get a fair substitution if the deal has changed or the items are out of stock.
I ordered 2 packs of 24 cans of coke for £7.50 each
these were substituted for 2 packs of 18 cans at £9.50 each
Sainsbury issued a credit of £4.00 that can only be used online. Other supermarkets give an automatic instant refund…but then other supermarkets ( like Tesco) substitute for the same value or more NEVER less.
I received 12 less cans which is not compensated in the refund. On collection I asked the member of staff if this shortfall would be compensated and he assured me that it would. Other wise I would have refused to accept the substitution. When I complained the response was that I was sent an email shortly prior to the collection outlining the substitution and should have refused. I was out and did not check my emails - also I have never been shortchanged by other supermarkets so I wasn't expecting it now!

I always switch off the substitutions in my basket, they are rubbish and I don’t want them

JohnTheRevelator · 09/06/2025 17:04

I never use Sainsbury's now for delivery. Just before Christmas I placed an order with them, including 2 vegetarian curry ready meals. They substituted 2 chicken curries. I thought common sense would have prevailed.

What a spoilt and entitled nation we have become.
Those supermarket pickers on minimum wage with incredibly high targets didn't have the luxury of hiding away throughout covid unlike most of the rest of the nation and never got an ounce of recognition.

You could always try going physically into a shop for the deals. Sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth.

This isn't always possible. There are lots of reasons why people shop online, including disabilities that make shopping physically difficult.

Looks like it's you and me against the world 😞

IIRC you also have to remember on your next shop to tick the box that says you want to use the credit….they don’t automatically apply it. And it runs out after something like 30 or 60 days, just disappears. I have unticked all subs so I don’t get anything now.

Tesco let me keep a sub recently that I tried to reject but refunded it as well, was a fridge item of some description and he said he’d have to bin it so I might as well keep it! Was quite good.

Edited

I do love crazy subs. Once ordered car shampoo via a Sainsbury’s shop and they substituted it for a sponge……I don’t need the sponge if I haven’t got any shampoo 😁

I've always found Tesco to be very good on this. Very few subs, sensible/generous ones if there are, and often freebies if the fruit is near date.ots of slots too

bugalugs45 · 09/06/2025 20:01

If you have a Waitrose nearby , yes a bit more expensive but they always sub better and don’t charge the difference . I had a £226 order Friday, not a single
sub

You can always hand the subs back for any reason with Sainsburys - you don’t have to accept them.

Yup, it's what we do. Drivers are always happy to take anything back and by the time I've put the shopping away, there's a ping on my phone saying they've refunded. They'll even take things back if you've just changed your mind, or short dated items, or if you've ordered things that go together, like veg and a piece of roast beef, but one item is unavailable - they'll take all items back if you ask them. Sainsbury are the best for being flexible and refunding stuff you ask them to take back!

Moier · 09/06/2025 20:11

You can ask Sainsbury's for money back to your account instead of credit on your next shop.
I ring customer service and always get refunded if something isn't right.
They are really amazing at anything like this. ( l do an online order every week).

They subbed my period products for condoms. I guess they do inhabited the same region!

I just hand unwanted stuff back to the driver.

You shouldn’t be drinking coke anyway it’s not good for you and definitely not 24 cans
