I have two children and I carnt find a job that would corispond with a nursery. Iv asked my mum and she’s only willing to have them one day but not every week. I want to better my children’s life but I’m just met with blockages at every turn dad does not live with me nor provides money or childcare

How old are the kids and what sort of work do you want and what are the hours you can do?

Would Universal Credit help with childcare if you needed it?

Ells96 · 03/06/2025 09:29

They are 9 months and 18 months and yes universal credit would help with nursery fees however nursery would need set days like every Monday ie and I carnt find a job that doesn’t go over nursery hours or set days
I would do anything I’m not fussy

Can your mum look after them and you do weekends?

Upsetbetty · 03/06/2025 09:31

What hours is nursery?

MaximusPaddimous · 03/06/2025 09:32

Have you looked at childcarechoices.gov.uk?
You will be eligible for funded childcare if you got a job.

TwoFeralKids · 03/06/2025 09:32

Should say technically if you can manage money wise you don't have to look for work until three. You might be entitled to some free childcare at two if on a low income (if in England). I suspect you might have to wait until they get free hours or they start school to get a job.

Fearfulsaints · 03/06/2025 09:35

What sort of skills or experience do you have?

Nursery hours lend themselves to office hours mainly. They aren't so good for lots of types of shift work in my experience.

Could school catering work? It wouldn't be full time.

Working parents of children older than 9 months will revive 30 funded childcare from September? There will be jobs out there that are 30 hours a week or less. And if you have to pay for any hours in tip, as a parent on UC you will receive help through UC to pay for the extra hours. Up to 85% I believe.

This is a great thread and a great question.

How much are you looking to make? I did prolific surveys for some pocket money when the kids were v little.

What you can do will also evolve over time as they get older so more things will be possible.

I would also recommend doing the free course online Rebel Finance Club which will help with the bigger picture of lots of things you can do to better their future and yours financially. It is completely free and you can do it all on you tube catch up in an hour or two a week if you can't make the live sessions. They are not selling anything just sharing what has worked for them as they are now financially independent.

I've worked in several different Citizen's Advice where hours were fixed and could be flexed to fit childcare. One of them allowed staff to split their shifts around school runs.

DongDingBell · 03/06/2025 11:52

What sort of jobs have you done before? And/or what sort of roles do you fancy?

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 03/06/2025 19:23

The father needs to pay you support

DillyDallyingAllDay · 03/06/2025 19:30

It might be worthwhile considering doing something that you can set your hours as you’d be self employed- getting into cleaning/ironing/gardening etc could be possible? There’s also lots of courses that could you started working in childcare in a nursery/childminders or even being a TA at a local school. If you’re in England, looks for ‘free courses for jobs’ to help you gain a level 3 qualification to start you off on a (new) work path
