12 month capital disregard what happens at the end?

Benefitbettyquestion · 03/04/2025 18:07

Anyone had 12month transitional protection/ capital disregard who can tell me what happens at the end of the 12months?
Does it just cancel automatically?

Yes. If you have capital over £16k at the end of transition UC will end.

Obviously, if there's been a change you need to let them know.

Benefitbettyquestion · 04/04/2025 07:52

Thank you I just wanted to know if it was automatic or if they sent something asking for details if your position had changed etc.
Last payment will be next month but there has been no contact.

I’m in this position too and would like to know what happens. I’ve heard some say you need to go in for a meeting to show proof of capital but not sure if that’s true for everyone.

Benefitbettyquestion · 04/04/2025 10:15

Yes would be interesting to hear from someone who has been through it.

My Transitional period is coming to an this Month. From what information I've read online on UC fb Groups it seems as if I would have to contact UC myself and let them know.
I may just click the ' close UC ' option on my account as if I let my UC run no doubt I will have to pay back payments.
But yes it's all very confusing as have not received any information from UC to say my transitional period is coming to an end.

Benefitbettyquestion · 09/04/2025 23:21

Weird isn't it.
I just assumed originally they would ask for your savings info again.

They will book you an appointment at the jobcentre to take in evidence of your capital, I was in this position and just requested to close my claim.

Symposium · 12/04/2025 22:49

That’s interesting @Goonergirl14 , so did you have to go to the job centre ? Or were you able to just close your claim?

Goonergirl14 · 12/04/2025 23:51

I just requested to close my claim, I have some capital and didn't want the hassle of going to the jobcentre.

Benefitbettyquestion · 15/04/2025 09:05

Thank you. Nice to hear from someone who has been through it. I will wait for them to book it and then request they close the claim.

I was asked to report the total value of my money, savings and investments after my 12th payment had been paid. So I did but this triggered a request to then attend an appointment to verify and provide evidence of all money savings and investments. As far as we were concerned we no longer qualify for universal credit and don’t expect any more payments so why do we need to attend an appt? Anyway my partner couldn’t attend due to work commitments and told them this in the journal but it still went down as a failure to attend. I then tried to just close/cancel the claim and was again told in order to close the claim they needed to verify evidence of capital before they can close the claim. I have an appt on Monday but I am really not happy as it’s none of their business, we know we are not entitled to claim anymore so that should be that. Worried if I don’t attend and provide all this evidence (3 months bank statements of every account) then they might make us repay money or fine us. I’ll just be glad to not have to deal with them anymore!!!

I have still been asked to go in & verify capital just to close my claim 😢

Benefitbettyquestion · 26/04/2025 12:36

What a waste of time Gina. If you aren't claiming anymore surely they don't need proof of whether you are eligible or not.
Hopefully I can just close mine without faff

I know! I suspect they want it on record so that if I suddenly spend all my savings then try claiming again in a month they will call it deprivation of capital and I won’t be eligible to claim. Good luck!

I'll be honest, I am a DWP staff member and I knew they would ask me to come in with my bank statements that's why I requested to close the claim before it got to that stage..I am hoping to not have to claim UC again and do feel guilty a bit for taking the 12 months transitional amounts.

Symposium · 26/04/2025 18:16

When did you request to close you claim@Goonergirl14, was it straight after your 12th payment?

Ah I should have closed claim earlier maybe. I just assumed it would stop automatically tbh then I did what they asked & updated savings and thought that would be that. I’ll find out what happens at my appt on Monday. No I hope I’ll never have to claim again too

How are you supposed to know though?! It's not 12 months it stops after, it's something to do with the number of assessment periods the transitional protection runs for, I would need to check. The jobcentre will want to check if some of your capital can be disregarded as you may still be entitled if so, if not they will just close your claim. If your capital goes below 16k you can claim again providing you keep receipts for any large purchases and they are justifiable such as home repairs..

Benefitbettyquestion · 27/04/2025 08:26

I think it's 12payments so that's 12 months for me last one in may. So maybe if i close it the day after payment it will work out.
If you look in your account you'll be able to see how many payments you've had.

So I attended my appointment on Monday and she just glanced through my bank statements and saw straight away that we would no longer qualify for UC. Claim closed. Didn’t take any copies and didn’t ask any questions. Just a formality.

Benefitbettyquestion · 02/05/2025 14:26

I did get a task on UC to upload statements etc. So I requested to close it online but nothing changed on there. I phoned the helpline to ask them to close it and they did. Just incase that saves anyone a trip in for no real reason

May I ask when and how you went about this? Before or after the final payment? And which reason did you select for closing the claim? Presumably if you select to close because of savings that will automatically trigger a pointless visit to the JC with proof etc?

Just a waste of your time and their time making you go in and not letting you just close claim down.

Symposium · 19/05/2025 16:24

Just to update in case it helps anyone else. We received our 12th payment with the capital disregarded and were then asked to update our savings information. I attempted to close the claim but was sent in circles with the system telling me to update savings. So I updated the savings then messaged on the journal requesting to close the claim. I got a message back saying my partner needed to write a message on his journal also requesting to close the claim. Once he did that I messaged again requesting to close and finally we got a notification that the claim is closed. Haven’t been asked to go to any appointment or show proof of savings so hopefully that’s the end of it.
