This is all monthly. Feels like a lot. It Includes toilet roll, laundry powder and detergent, toothpaste, hand soap, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, vitamins.

Why would it not be okay, if you can afford it? I do not spend that amount, but you could have ten children for all I know.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 25/03/2025 21:00

How was anybody meant to answer that?

You don't say how many people it's for?

Whether it's basics or luxury?

Whether you can afford it or not?

You might be familiar with the concept of'how long is a bit of string?'

SapphireOpal · 25/03/2025 21:02

That seems high, but of course it's "ok" if you can afford it. And depends on your family size - if you've 4 teenage girls with long hair who all need shampoo etc then you're obviously going to spend more...!

I reckon we average nearer £40 just from a quick calculation and I think we are quite high users of some of those products. Are you buying very expensive shampoo/conditioner etc?

Shinyandnew1 · 25/03/2025 21:07

I don't spend that much on my household and would say it sounds a lot.

That's pretty irrelevant though.

Do YOU think it's a lot? Can you afford it? Is that lots of luxury brands?

GoatCatTaco · 25/03/2025 21:21

Just under £20 a week?
Sounds high for us, but noone is fond of expensive brands in this house.
I can quite easily see if we all upgraded the brands we used, and added some hair and make-up for 2 teenage girls rather than the tin of lynx I need to buy a couple of times a year for the boys it could easily reach that level.
Can you afford it? If so, no problem. If you need to cut back, I reckon it could easily be reduced.

PickAChew · 25/03/2025 21:25

If you can afford it, then fine. If not, make swaps eg powder instead of laundry pods. Make sure you buy things on special offer as much as possible and don't be afraid to check out places like home bargains.

PaintDecisions · 25/03/2025 21:30

For how many people?

I probably spend under £30/month for two people. Cushelle loo roll (medical issues awaiting surgery and I appreciate good loo roll!), whatever laundry stuff is on sale when I go in.

I bulk buy toothpaste, soap, shampoo and conditioner, I don't use body wash as I use bar soap which lasts for weeks, and my vitamins are usually topped up every three months. I buy moisturiser every six months.

Trying to think what we spend. It doesn't sound unreasonable to me. We have 3 teenage DC.

Box of 48 rolls of WGAC toilet roll £45 (this lasts about 6 weeks)
3.25kg box of Fairy Non Bio £10.50
Life Supplies 3 refill packs £18
Hand Soap from TKMaxx, 2 bars £8 (will last longer than a month)
Gruum Shampoo and Conditioner £12
Big bar of soap from TK Maxx £5 (don't use body wash)
Don't use vitamins

Obviously that's all expensive ecofriendly branded stuff but shows it's certainly possible to spend that much (and reminds me how bloody expensive our plastic free toothpaste is).

Augustus40 · 11/04/2025 16:13

Personally I would go pound shops for household items. Toilet roll kitchen roll cleaning agents. Much cheaper.

bugalugs45 · 11/04/2025 17:37

I bulk buy mine but averaged out over the month I would spend about half that , maybe a little bit more .
I buy nice shampoo but not crazy expensive , £10 ish for shampoo & conditioner ,use 2 bottles of each a month at a guess , wash hair daily & shower gel £2- £3 , toothpaste £2.50, hand soap £1 ,
I buy all of those in Boots & do my recycle religiously , so get £5 points on a £10 spend meaning everything is half price 😊 then I treat myself at Christmas with points .
Obsessed with persil wonder wash at mo but again bought when was half price @£5,big lenor £3 , prob use 1 a month of each . Decent toilet roll when on offer but a big pack would last ages & i always have loads of everything ‘ in stock ‘ 🤣

HermioneWeasley · 11/04/2025 17:41

Sounds expensive to me. We probably spend half of that for a family of 4.

saveforthat · 11/04/2025 17:41

Home Bargains usually works out cheapest for things like this (unless you want luxury goods).

But does it include toilet roll

Caspianberg · 11/04/2025 18:26

Yeah we probably spend that.

Ds kids vitamins and probiotics
wgac loo roll
Weleda shampoo/ conditioner , kids shampoo
Locctaine bar soap
Laundry powder and leaves
Dishwasher tablets
Dishsoap refills

I bulk buy most so don’t buy monthly basis.

Overthebow · 11/04/2025 18:29

It’s more than we spend for a family of 4, so it can definitely be done for less if you have a similar sized family. Of course it’s ok though if you can afford it.

Budgetquery · 11/04/2025 18:40

For how many people?! Do you really buy laudsry detergent and shampoo etc EVERY month.

Caspianberg · 11/04/2025 19:18

@Budgetquery - we don’t. But it’s worked out across the year or per month as in Op case. Ie wgac crap loo roll is €48 a box. If I buy 3 boxes a year, that’s €144, or €12 a month.
if you add buy the couple boxes laundry powder, dishwasher tablets etc per year if large boxes and divide. Plus teeth stuff, shampoos, soaps etc. you can see how €75 isn’t that unusual.

Our dishwasher tablets are €14 for box 70. Roughly use 1 every day. So a box lasts 2 months approximately. Or €7 a month
