Would Tesco own branded, Alberto balsam, or even garnier be bad for my hair/body

I've done this all my life and it's been fine

my mum would cry if you gave her shampoo not from Alberto Balsam!

WonderingWanda · 25/03/2025 20:48

It's hard to know. If your hair is coloured or bleached or you use a lot of heat treatments then you usually need shampoo and conditioner which has something extra. Likewise if you have thin flat hair / greasy or very dry hair. I have long thick hair and can get away with the odd wash with cheap rubbish....even shower gel if I've run out or am at the gym and forgot mine but after a couple of washes it become unruly and knotty and a bit duller so I need to use a decent conditioner. How about washing less often and using cheaper stuff every other wash if you need to save.

WinterMorn · 25/03/2025 20:49

Why would they be bad? There are strict laws and procedures to guarantee product safety.

This.

Aldi shampoos are excellent. I was only musing the other day how much money I’d wasted on expensive shampoos.

ItisIbeserk · 25/03/2025 21:08

Aldi Aussie dupes are good.

Nsky62 · 25/03/2025 21:10

I’ve been using bio d handwashfor shampoo, and take flaxseed oil soon conditioner, hair fab

weshallovercomeaswevedonebefore · 26/03/2025 13:44

Shampoos are much the same, I listened to a podcast on it once and they said spend more on conditioning stuff as that sits on your hair for longer. Shampoo you wash out instantly so doesn’t really matter what you use. Same with shower gel, thoigh I do find you use less with a more expensive one as they lather better, but I still think ultimately it’s going down the drain (literally!) so not worth more than a couple of quid. I like the Tesco ones that are coconut / mango scented and cost about a pound. My skin is great, never used anything else.

Favouritefruits · 26/03/2025 13:46

I always give my husband the cheap stuff and he’s never complained about dry or irritable skin/scalp. I think it’s fine, most probably made in the same factory as the higher priced brands

YourWinter · 26/03/2025 13:48

I use any own-brand coconut shampoo and conditioner because I like the scent. Alberto Balsam has been fine. I have long fluffy grey hair.

Aldi Lacura Rejuvelate is the very best moisturiser for my skin.

sunbum · 26/03/2025 13:50

Lidl and Aldi shower gel is lovely, I use it daily (its sold as Lacurna/Cien own brand in each but its exactky the same)

I use branded shampoo and conditioner on my hair, as it is coloured and goes frizzy without a heavy duty conditioner. I get the LIDL/Aldi shampoo and conditioner dupes for the family and honestly they are great. I will probably drop my branded shampoo and swap.

Aldi toothpaste is cheap and really good I find. The antibac handsoap in both Aldi and Lidl os identical to Carex etc.

YourIcyReader · 26/03/2025 13:51

Apparently the new M&S shampoos and conditioners are very good and very reasonably priced. I also like Simple for cheap shampoo and shower gels ☺️

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 26/03/2025 14:10

I also use Simple products and they suit my skin/hair.
I have a tendency to get rashy with perfumed stuff.

SoapCollector · 26/03/2025 17:34

I've just discovered Lidl Cien Q10 day and night creams and they're fantastic! I have mild rosacea and easily irritated dry skin and these two creams in the last 3 days that I've been using them have calmed it right down already, with no stinging as often happens with anything new I try! Super cheap, £1.49 each and cruelty free too!

LonelyMomma · 18/04/2025 18:46

As somebody that often uses 40£+ shampoos and conditioners I will tell You this much… once upon a time I bought Alberto Balsam for my husband and I used it, and I am never going back to those expensive ones!

Lovelynames123 · 18/04/2025 18:50

I never spend much on any toiletries and I'm fine, my hair and skin is in good condition. I tend to just buy whatever shower gel is on offer, same with handsoap and I like the aldi/lidl L'Oréal dupes.

My only splurge is Clinique BB cream

myplace · 18/04/2025 18:52

A bar of soap is even better.
Basics are fine.

Whatflavourjellybabyisnice · 18/04/2025 19:16

I am queen of budgeting, but I personally spend more on my hair care and more on my face wash and facial moisturiser.
I don't spend much on shower gel and soap.
The shampoo and conditioner I use don't have silicones and the latter uses shea butter as a main ingredient.
They aren't very expensive because I use less of them and one is a shampoo bar which is very economic but maybe more outlay (depending on how cheap you call cheap).. if a knock off wash and go is £1 to buy from Aldi then I might be spending a bit more.
Cheap shampoo dries my hair out and is too stripping and cheap conditioner is useless to me (I have used it years ago).
I don't like the petrol chemicals that are standard in cheap moisturisers and sometimes present in expensive ones because they don't fully moisturise me. They just slide off my face and it feels dry very quickly.

bugalugs45 · 18/04/2025 19:20

I’m quite fussy about my shampoo / conditioner, don’t spend a fortune but have tried the cheaper brands and they don’t work for me.
I only buy when on offer though & stock up , and I also take advantage of boots recycle ( £5s worth of points when you spend £10 ) then I save my points to buy nice toiletries again !

Bert2e · 18/04/2025 19:27

Alberto Balsem conditioner is fabulous - no silicone!

I'm the same @Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow with perfumed stuff, come out in hives and eczema but found the 'faith in nature' brand I don't react to as only perfumed with natural essential oils, just in case you fancy trying something that smells nice for a change. My personal favourite is the lavender and geranuim😌

suburburban · 18/04/2025 19:30

I think the Aussie shampoos are good and not too expensive

FuckityFux · 18/04/2025 21:08

I find ordinary wash out Hair Conditioners are a waste of effort as you wash them straight off. I also only ever shampoo it once rather than twice as it doesn’t get dirty as I don’t live in a city anymore.
I also use a diluted spray leave in conditioner (Revlon is a good one) and spray 2- 3 squirts and rub on my palms then comb through my hair with my fingers.
