Weekly food shop spend for 2 adults and a toddler

At the moment we budget £80-90 a week for the 3 of us. That’s breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, dairy etc. Then end up doing a top up for bread, milk and yoghurts at the end so probably more like £100 a week.

Does that seem reasonable? It’s not an issue, it’s what we budget and we can afford it. DH works at M&S so with his 20% discount it was costing around £90. It was slowly creeping up so I went to Aldi today and it came to £85, though I think I bought more. But I don’t think I could really cut it much lower.

Anyway.. does that feel right? When I mention it to family they always say it’s extortionate and that’s their cost for a fortnight.

does this include nappies, baby processed snacks etc because they do add up! We spend about £60-70 including wine for two adults but I cook from
scratch and don’t waste anything

It includes a pack of pull ups every 2 weeks as she only wears them to bed plus wipes but yes her snacks do make up a good portion.. raisins, yoghurts, fruit.. omg the fruit.

I think that’s pretty good going to be honest!

We are 2 adults & an 11 month old daughter and ours is easily £100 a week. I don’t honestly think we could cut it down much unless we stopped eating as much meat/fresh fruit/veg

Ours is £50-£60 on average for 2 adults and 2 preschoolers. Not including nappies. We would do a top up shop of no more than £10. That's at Lidl and we do not eat meat.

But the kids have lunch and breakfast in childcare 3 days a week, which you're including so it sounds similar.

I think that’s very frugal. My weekly shopping bill has continued to rise and I now spend at least £150 per week for two adults and a cat.

For me it seems a lot (1 adult, 2 older teens so basically 3 adults). Granted we don't have nappies and wipes. We spend £60 every 10 days. I am though on a tight budget as live on benefits. I meal plan every meal and snack. I do an online delivery due to disability, but this helps me stick to a tight budget and not be tempted, however I can't take advantage of yellow stickers.
I started doing 10 day shops to eek out my budget, but slowly increased it from 7 days each time adding a day. Sometimes I manage to get to 11/12 days. I think this has really helped my budget. It does mean you have to be more organised and have tinned/dried/frozen fruits or bread and milk in the freezer. It means checking the use by dates and altering the menu etc but has been worthwhile for us. I also have my two cheap meal days, which are usually Jacket potato and filling and egg and beans on toast. I batch cook lots of meals and fill them out with extra vegetables. So I'd say you could reduce your shopping bill but do you need to go to the extremes I do probably not?

I live alone, well with cat he’s £20 a month, been spending about £70 a week, trying to reduce it, affordable yes, I want more from my money, about £10 in butchers, been using Tesco online. Now trying to Lidl more tho don’t drive.
Aiming for £55 /60 see how I get on, just started this week.
Depends what you buy tho

Alittlebit9 · 25/03/2025 15:56

Thanks everyone - I guess it really differs between families, but I think we are averaging!

We're around £160 a week, two adults and two older teens. My DS is 6 foot 5 and eats three eggs every morning and mountains of toast. I cook from scratch but we eat meat and drink alcohol.

moanafan · 25/03/2025 16:07

Christ, we average about £140-160 a week, that’s with pull ups, wipes and any toiletries week by week. Two adults, one toddler, two cats (a box of pouch food a week-ish) and a teenager that stays twice a week. We are terrible for budgeting though and buy ALOT of snacks which always add up. No booze either! Wish we could get things down in price!!
