How much is your weekly grocery bill? Family of 5

Glitterballofdreams · 18/03/2025 07:43

Hey I’m just curious as to how much other large families spend per week on groceries. At the moment I do an online shop of around £120-30 and then we probably spend an extra £40 on top up shops.
whats everyone else spending?
thanks in advance 💜

About £275. Three teenage sons who est about 90 eggs per week between them. And one teen dd and three dogs and two cats. And me.

Pinkhat123 · 18/03/2025 07:46

Same as you, I tried to keep the online shop to £100 but I end up having to go local more
during the week.
realistically £120–140 per week online and maybe another £50.
i still have 2 DC in nappies and 2 cats

indecisivewoman81 · 18/03/2025 07:49

About £140 in the actual shop then a top up for things like fruit and bread half way through the week which is about another £20

Bjorkdidit · 18/03/2025 07:51

Even with the same family size, there's still lots of variables, ie budget, other monetary priorities, dietary requirements, what shops you have available and how much time you have to shop around and batch cook etc.

Are you happy to compare numbers between £100 and £400 pw or is there something in particular you need help with?

Thanks for highlighting but I think we are all aware.

Bjorkdidit · 18/03/2025 08:32

But what would be the point of of comparing what is in effect a load of random numbers?

Surely the OP has a more constructive motive behind her question?

pearbottomjeans · 18/03/2025 08:32

Same as you - 3 kids between 3&10. School dinners (not packed lunch) and takeaways on top of that amount.

Well the numbers seem quite similar so far…

festivemouse · 18/03/2025 09:19

Honestly we spend more than you and we’re just a household of two and two cats, who don’t drink at home 😂

I have 3 kids in total. All under 4.

Does anyone really do a weekly shop and nothing else? I have no idea what I spend per week really.

for example last Sunday I did a £170 Tesco delivery. I spent £40 on a Waitrose delivery mid week (mainly was just sushi for lunch and a few bits). I spent £25 in M&S on the way home last night. Husband bought a pie for £12 at the farmers market… we order wine from a merchant - £300- £400 every few months. I buy toddler snacks online from the brand- £20 every few months. We had takeaway for
£70 last night… I’ve got a mindful chef delivery booked for next week around £80

Rainbow1235 · 18/03/2025 09:30

5 adults and 1 child here and usually spend about £170 a week but need regular top ups of bread and milk throughout the week . That’s not including alcohol

Pinkhat123 · 18/03/2025 10:29

I know what you mean, we used to spend lots like that. We looked at where all our money was going and realised we didn’t plan our meals very well and kept changing our minds what we fancied, wasted food and / or got takeaway instead or went out. Now we plan a bit better and it has helped.
I don’t drink (breastfeeding) but my husband goes to pub once per week most weeks and probably ends up spending the same on alcohol. I also spend a load of money on Amazon at least £100 per week, I buy everything on it as find it hard to get to shops with kids. “oh I need some socks” but on Amazon. “Oh I need some kids vitamins” buys on Amazon… it all adds up.

I guess where do you draw the line, you have to enjoy life! I would be lost without online shopping!

Family of five, two adults, two 6 foot teens and a preteen. We are up to about £220/ week.

Glitterballofdreams · 18/03/2025 14:06

Thank you for all of your responses. I think we need to spend a bit more on the weekly shop as it doesn’t seem to be lasting. I try to stick to £120 but think with the increase of prices maybe £140/150 would be more realistic.

3 kids under 6, husband who eats a lot (especially meat) and dairy free milk. I like to cook and love fish.

average about £120-40 per week with £20-50 in top ups. Nothings wasted, everything gets eaten rarely throw things away.

that includes cleaning stuff, laundry stuff, and basic toiletries like toothpaste.

id love it to be less but don’t think it is possible. Someone (family of 4) told me they spend about 60£/week and I honestly don’t think that’s possible unless you eat pasta everyday? (She hates cooking though so possible this is how she manages such a small budget!!) either that or she is deluded how much her little too ups add up to each week (she’s pretty well off so could easily be that!)

WednesdaysChild25 · 18/03/2025 14:32

£70-£80 one adult & two cats,
everything bought in online shop once a week, cat food, most toiletries etc, breakfast lunch and dinners.
Occasional trip to £land or bottle of wine.
On a very strict/tight budget

isthesolution · 18/03/2025 14:33

£200 a week approx. Everything just seems so expensive

whirlyhead · 18/03/2025 14:49

2 adults, several cats, about €250 a week and that’s with doing a lot of cooking from scratch and very little meat.

jjeoreo · 18/03/2025 15:09

I'd say we spend £250 a week. One online shop of 120 quid and then a top up shop or two, plus we tend to do a shop on the weekend.

2 adults, 3 kids 7-2 and we feed my mother in law every other night if not more.

BrieAndChilli · 18/03/2025 15:29

We are 5 - 3 teens (2 boys and 1 girl). Kids at school, DH wfh mostly so eats leftovers and I either take something with me or buy a meal deal..

we get hello fresh which is 5 meals a week for 4 people (but portion sizes are big and I add in an extra chicken breast eg if it is a breast each, dont add extra chicken if it is chopped). with utilising discounts etc that is £40-60 a week

then I do a shop for breakfast/snacks weekend food etc which is always at least £100!!!

Then school lunch money top up is about £45-50 a week for the 3 of them and probably an other £10-20 on bits I buy for myself from tesco express near work.

ranges between 80-130 depending on what we need/ have stocked etc. two adults one teen daughter and two preteen boys. Maybe about 20-30 in the week on top ups.

I did ☺️ I cook mainly from scratch, we have very little (if any) food waste. So it’s not as if we aren’t utilising what we have, just wondered how much everyone else is spending 😁

How old are your children? We spend £135 and probably another £50 on top up shops but ours have school lunches and tea at childcare some of the days
