Sainsbury v Aldi

Sat our two iPads side by side after doing a Sainsbury online shop and compared prices and was quite surprised to find Sainsbury coming up very favourably on this food/ingredients shop. (Including a few things fractionally cheaper - I did a price/kg or item comparison).

I do purchase a lot of Aldi price matches and cook from scratch. We live a bit rurally so I’m also saving fuel and a bonus not to go to the store (- but did pay for a Sainsbury delivery pass last year)

id wondered this a lot in the past few months and adult DC adamant it couldn’t be. That said I’m still shocked how much a shop costs.

im going to do it to my next three weeks shops as I’ll need more non food items soon and will be interesting to see how it pans out.

I consistently find Aldi cheaper (and better quality).

I prefer Sainsbury veg but and Aldi mince.

might have been a one off due to the items chosen so wondering what others think

I live in a town where I have all the big supermarkets sainsbury's is quite expensive but I save up and go and buy their cheese because aldi is cheap it's also bitter as shit

goingtotown · 16/02/2025 23:21

I find Aldi fruit & veg poor quality.

Bromptotoo · 16/02/2025 23:45

Mix/match.

Aldi is significantly cheaper for basics like milk, bacon/eggs etc and, subject to some quality/longevity issues, fruit and veg. Wine/beer also fine if you're not brand fussy.

Some things. brands etc, need to be Sainsbury etc or Waitrose.

See this is my dilemma, I find the same, so Sainsbury carrots last well but the Aldi ones didn’t.

The dog like’s primula cheese with his tablets, he’s not keen on other makes and I prefer the tube as it’s easy to squeeze a bit out. I like a bit of primula with some smoked salmon in a sandwich but when it comes to good cheese it’s totally wasted on me.

Milk is exactly the same price in Aldi, Sainsbury's, Tesco etc (£1.45 for 4 pints). Eggs aren't much different, if at all, from memory.

We use Sainsbury's as most of what we get is price matched and the amount of Nectar points we earn during a year by maximising offers make up for any difference in price, which we use for Christmas.

I maybe out of step.

Now I'm retired and my income is index linked it's less bother than when, ten years ago, my wage was frozen and season tickets and station parking were not.

Tanktanktank · 17/02/2025 00:09

@NoWordForFluffy i haven’t taken the nectar points into consideration so that’s a good point although I spend them as soon as I get them. I noticed today in the app you can Lock your nectar points from being spent, I think that’s a good idea as a friend lost hers to when she was hacked.

Yes, I'm glad you can now do that as we'll generally have a couple of hundred quid, give or take, on ours at any one time.

We have linked cards and max out point collecting offers between the cards, so do quite well out of it!

You could try ordering fruit and veg boxes online. I started doing this as I was fed up with throwing out a lot of Aldi veg.

healthybychristmas · 17/02/2025 00:24

I think the problem starts when you go into Sainsbury's because you're tempted to buy things that you don't really need whereas that never happens in Aldi. If you can just order online then I'm sure you can be very careful.

Tanktanktank · 17/02/2025 00:40

@healthybychristmas that’s one of the reasons I like online you can’t be tempted too much. I generally shop from my favourites and check out a few offers that only really the ones I know I will use.

Having said that I do very occasionally like to go to the store and browse the shelves because I’ve realised recently I’m bored with food and because I shop the way I do I never see new things and the pictures never do them justice. I recently found the big lamb Samosa and they are rather scrumptious.

I like Sainsburys for quality and the prices are reasonable if you get a nectar price. Plus I save my points for Christmas. Shame they stopped the double up.

BurntBroccoli · 17/02/2025 18:29

I've just done a small shop at Sainsbury's and there were lots of offers on. Fresh soup was £1.25 a pot which is good (cheaper than a tin of Heinz).
Small conference pears were 69p a bag .
Clothes were 20% off everything.
I shopped at Lidl too over the weekend and prices are going up. They also didn't sell any vegetarian fresh soup (sadly as I love their hearty veg one) which is why I popped into Sainsburys!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 17/02/2025 18:37

I’ve compared my own shopping at Tesco’s with my colleague discount and the same shop spread between b and m and Aldi, (because I’m a boring same shop shopper). Tesco was still more expensive even with the extra discount.

might have to try Sainsbury’s comparison now!
