hi all

hoping for some clarification as i’m unsure!

currently have our home up for sale but i just want to get settled somewhere (renting)

i know you can get help with rent if you’re on UC which i am now but i’m wondering can i get help whilst still owning a property? i really just want me and the kids settled somewhere now and stop living in between places

i’ve seen a property but it is slightly out of my budget if i wasn’t to be eligible for help yet, but it’s close to my work and close to my parents which would be great as dad won’t be in the picture as much

Not enough information op. Are you separating? Is there equity in the house? How much will your share be if there is? Who would be living in the house if you move?

ralsta · 07/02/2025 17:29

@YourSnugHazelTraybake

yes separating - after fees probably only around £3/4k each

it will be me and my 2 children living in the house (3yr & 1yr)

I believe its unlikely that you would get help with rent while you still own. In the application, it will ask if you own any property, I've never clicked yes to find out what happens with that.

I would suggest contacting either the universal credit advice line or citizens advice who will be able to give you a direct answer based on your circumstances.

Long term, the amount that you expect to have from the house sale is under the £6k they allow in savings before they start making reductions on the benefit.

Really hope you get something sorted and settled soon!

I don't think you can get help with rent whilst you own a property, no

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 07/02/2025 21:53

If the house is up for sale and your ex is remaining in it while you rent then yes you can get help with rent. Uc will disregard the value of your share for a period of time as long as you are taking steps to obtain it.

Usual ill informed nonsense.

On what's said OP should be eligible for UC which can include housing costs.

There is a disregard for property where it is for sale or steps are being taken to that end.

Disregard is for six months but can be extended.
