😁 Who did that?

God, you know that you've decimated your freshly minted in government popularity boost when they're making Christmas songs about dreadful policies.

If they were going for the jugular they should have changed the Rachel Reeves £22 billion overlay for one of the many previous pre-election labour speeches in which they say that the awful Tories intend to tinker with the wfa and the dire consequences that would follow and highlight the hypocrisy.

ILoveJSmith · 19/12/2024 13:50

Apparently it's going to be the Christmas no1.
I turned a pensioner this year.. I'm also a Waspie.
Stammer is all over every news platform for going back on all these promises he made to get elected.

Yes, my dm has been hit by both of these decisions. I think, while changes to universal fuel allowance payments was inevitable, the cut off point is cruelly low.

Is it really going to be Christmas number one? It's kind of awful to listen to the crowbarred-in words and bits that don't rhyme, so I can only assume that people are gritting their teeth and enduring it to get it up the charts. 😁

It's strange there were no seasonal songs when they capped benefits or when a third of children were in poverty or when millions were forced to use foodbanks or when street homelessness went through the roof.

There have definitely been songs about homelessness, we had to sing the Streets of London song in school assemblies. Songs about hunger and suffering have a good line in the Christmas charts.

I'm sure there would have been plenty of people around to cobble some badly versed parodies together about the capped benefits and food banks had they wanted to but I am Daniel Blake was a good movie that highlighted the horrors of austerity measures though.

He didn't promise to pay the Waspi women.
I am a waspi woman i support the decision not to pay. According to the ombudsman it would only be between 1 and 3 thousand pounds that isn't a life changing amount of money. But it would cost the Government billions money much better spent on public services which affect us all including me and my peers
It's also true that 90%of women knew about the changes. I knew and so did everyone I know. And if I didn't know compensation at that level isn't going to make any difference anyway.
Similarly I don't have any issue losing my winter fuel allowance. I don't need it, families with children need support more than I do.

Upstartled · 19/12/2024 14:35

Yes, this is Starmer, saying he doesn't support waspi women getting compensation.

Freezing this Christmas. Your opinions?

Have you not heard of lad baby, who Christmas number one for five years in a row with charity singles? Money raised going to Trussel Trust food banks.

I wasn't aware this single was being released to raise money for pensioners.

So then you and the 90% of people who did know wouldn't claim and the cost wouldn't be billions and the money would go to those who really need and deserve it.

Why are you making decisions for the people who didn't know when you're not one of them?

The cap didn't apply to any child already born, it was the parents choice to have more children and not get the benefit after that.

The Ladbaby songs raised money for the Trussell Trust so I don't really know what you're talking about.

Well good for you... not needing it..
Plenty to do..it's not a competition between OAP's and families with children.. everyone should get the support and what they are entitled to.. .
90% of women did not know the change was coming and so soon.
It wasn't broadcast .

I don't support this waspi business. Men have had a much worse deal for decades. Ridiculous. And the winter fuel allowance for every pensioner was also ridiculous.

Research shows that 90% did know about it.
I certainly aren't smug I am just pointing out my experience. and I certainly don't have a huge pension. My pension is much lower than the average UK wage. But I don't think a one off payment of a couple of thousand pounds or an extra £300 a year is going to make any difference to my life.
It's not s competition but funding is limited and it should go where it will have the most impact.

YourChirpyFatball · 21/12/2024 22:44

@Whoarethoseguys Get you, all comfortable and smug. £3000 is 10 years WFA for some who do need it!

PrincessofLiechtenstein · 22/12/2024 10:10

They put the actual pension up by more money than they took away. Far more than other benefits and most wages. These benefits should be means tested. It's ridiculous that they weren't.

He and Reeves did promise to pay it. 🙄

123H · 11/01/2025 14:03

I am 68 years old. I'm a WASPI woman and I won't receive the WFA now it's been means tested.

I support the government's decision regarding both these issues.

It was wrong that taxpayers money was going to pensioners who didn't need it (WFA). This was brought in by a Tory government to keep pensioners (their key voters) happy. Now it's means tested, so only those on a low income get it - quite right!

I've worked all my adult life, contributing tax and NI into the country's coffers. I want to see my tax being spread evenly across groups of people - young families, children, those requiring social care etc.

123H · 11/01/2025 14:06

Boomer55 there was NO commitment to payouts for WASPIs in Labour's 2024 manifesto.
