How bad do clothes have to be for you to declutter?

Both yours and your kids clothes?

My daughter has a sweatshirt she loves but it's really thin now. No holes or stains just a bit faded. She only wears it in the house.

She's either young enough that she'll grow out of it soon, or she's old enough that it's up to her whether she wears it or not :)

But something that still fits and is just a bit thin sounds fine.

rags, stains, not fitting

When it becomes a rag, divorces itself from the body!

heartbroken22 · 18/12/2024 12:45

That's great I'll keep it if she's happy she's happy. Going to challenge myself and not get rid of good stuff this year.

If it’s turned into a rag basically

My daughter's joggers are getting a bit of wear as shown in the photo. How long will they last? Would you keep or get rid? Planning for her to wear them around the house....

Some things I wear inside the house until they fall apart. Usually cotton or wool. Then it goes in a bag marked 'rags' for recycling.

Polyester jumpers last a year at most.

I am not buying any more super soft polyester. It's landfill as soon as it leaves the shop.

Kids don't wear stains or ripped things outside unless doing some sort of painting activity or major mud thing. But if comfy and still wearable - kids can wear it at home or in the garden.

Adults - if little holes or stains, kept for DIY or gardening. Not for outside or casual wear inside.

I don't have the time to mend - wish I did to be more eco.

You can visibly mend that! YouTube is a good place to look. She can learn how to do it easily too, if she's old enough to not be growing out of stuff every five minutes 😁

Basically stuff the kids have grown out of or have obvious rips/stains that can’t be repaired.

For me I bin stuff when it’s beyond me wearing it around the house. I have a work wardrobe of very presentable clothes, things I wear for WFH, casual clothes and then cleaning/painting stuff that isn’t fit for public. I have a proper clear out at the end of winter and summer and then have a list of things that need replaced. Things I’m keeping get cleaned and repaired if need be and packed away for the next year.

The waistband will be hidden by T-shirt or jumper so assuming the rest of the garnet is ok I’d keep it for kicking around the house, or would repair it in some way.

Once mine have actual holes in, they get downgraded to bed clothes/house clothes/messy work clothes/dog walking clothes, then eventually they are used as rags for window/car cleaning etc. Larger items like towels and duvet covers become dog/cat bedding or covers for the car seats when the dog is coming in the car. Or used as dust sheets when we’re painting. I like getting my money’s worth out of stuff 😂

Waitingfordoggo · 05/08/2025 14:55

Those joggers are fine for mooching about the house. Why wouldn’t they be?!

I'm the same, I'm just debating whether to put patches on my favourite old, thin, repaired nightie. My son saw me cleaning the windows with old cut up knickers and said 'please, make it stop'.
