Money left over after bills

kiana2015 · 06/12/2024 11:07

Each month after all bills, food shopping etc I have roughly 700 left over to cover the month (I have separate money for food) would this be considered average or tight? I'm curious as to what others have left over and how you manage to get through the month only I find it is tight and I'm usually running low by the end of the month

I don’t know what’s normal but £700 without food needing to be included would be a dream for me

WestiesAreMyBesties · 06/12/2024 11:28

I think that's more than enough for a single person. As long as you're not being frivolous with it you should be able to go out, socialise and have some left over.

Timeforabiscuit · 06/12/2024 11:30

That sounds a good amount on the face of it, but depends if you have regular savings already and what part of the country you're in.

CrazylazyJane · 06/12/2024 11:31

Crikey! If all your bills and food are paid up and you still have £700 left I have to ask what you're spending on to feel like it's still tight with money. I have £200 left each month but feel like I'm doing better than most as a lot of people live in their overdraft month to month.

MammaKel · 06/12/2024 11:32

I think, on average, a family has around £200-£800 a month left afterward bills, so for a single person to have £700 is probably pretty good.

Anothercoffeeafter3 · 06/12/2024 11:37

We have a joint account (2 adults and 11 year old DS) we have around 1.5-2k fun money after all bills/savings etc around 4k if I we just include essentials.

I think you spend what you have/want as some months we can feel skint as we have blown through it others it mainly gets added to the house renovation pot.

Caterina99 · 06/12/2024 11:46

I think it depends. Is that £700 purely discretionary? Your savings, pension, mortgage etc are in good shape? If that’s true then £700 for a single person seems like quite a lot to me, but I suppose it’s surprising how quickly it can go!

mrsm43s · 06/12/2024 11:54

We as a family don't spend £700 a month after bills (I'm including food/travel/repairs/essential clothes/commitments such as gym membership or music lessons etc as bills).

So our discretionary is basically meals and drinks out, days out etc.

We have a lot more than that left over, but we save the bulk of it.

CheekySwan · 06/12/2024 11:55

£1400 after bills, fuel and school dinners.

Tdcp · 06/12/2024 11:59

After all bills and groceries we're probably left with less than £200 or so. We both work and get paid a small amount more than minimum wage. 2 adults, 1 kid and 2 cats.

Pigtailsandall · 06/12/2024 13:39

I think it depends heavily on your family circumstances too. We are a family of 3 and have about 2K leftover after essential bills, basic food shop, cat-related costs and a small amount for public transport travel. We don't have a car and school lunches are free. We sometimes pay for the occasional after-school club or activity too.

We're trying to save a big chunk so we can pay off more of our mortgage before our fix-term ends, so prob have about 500-600 a month for "fun" money.

Balloonhearts · 06/12/2024 13:42

-800. My outgoings far exceed my income atm with nowhere I can cut back. We're frequent customers of the food bank and the electric company have been legends considering I've paid them about £30 in the last 5 months.

loropianalover · 06/12/2024 13:43

It’s about 170 a week discretionary - birthdays, a pair of shoes, dinner and drinks, flights, hotel booking; it could easily be spent. So it depends on your lifestyle.

It also depends on if you’re paying the bills > saving > 700 quid left.

This Q always comes up here, but everyone has a different idea of what after all bills etc. means, so it's generally difficult to get much from the As.

wintersgold · 06/12/2024 21:16

Does this include big spends like holidays, and does a portion of this go to savings? If so I can understand how it's difficult

MerryBee · 07/12/2024 06:41

I'm finding the gas/electric payments take a lot of money especially travelling just shop now and then food prices have gone up dramatically have a bit left sometimes try to save money but usually end up not doing there's always something else. Feel bad that I don't

RubyRedBow · 07/12/2024 07:27

I have around £1000 per month after my bills are paid.

This.

Are you including any bills you pay annually or do they have to come out of the £700? Car costs if you have a car?

£700 sounds like loads but if you've got to pay to run a car out of that for example it's a lot less than it sounds. What has that actually got to cover?

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 12/12/2024 20:15

After paying my half into the joint account, which covers food and all household bills / expenses /childcare and any child related expenses, I have about £700 left for myself. This covers apple subscription of 2.99, phone contract of 8.90, diesel which is about 50 per month I suppose. This will also have to pay for any other car expenses (MOT, insurance and repairs). I try to put 500 into savings each month but sometimes I do run low and end up taking a bit back out of my savings account - eg forgotten expenses such as dentist bill, professional registration fee, a birthday

HPandthelastwish · 12/12/2024 20:33

With that £700 are you siphoning some off for those big one offs, MOT, car service, repairs, tax, insurances etc or do you deal with them on the month they are due?

Euan789 · 04/03/2025 03:23

I have around £800 I give myself £600 as a personal allowance per month and slot £200 away for holidays or anything I need but it is a lot of money depends on what you do and what your life style is

Loveduppenguin · 04/03/2025 11:58

heres mine…
In -2750
CB-280
Benefits-177

Total: 3,207

Rent 1400
Electricity 120
Life insurance 40
Internet/tv/2 phones 86
Bin charge 23
Apple 20
Disney 10
DS club 25

Total 1,724
Leftover 1,483

1483 goes to
300 food
240 fuel
200 savings
50 kids clubs/school trips etc
100 treats/coffees/takeaways
100 clothes/shoes
50 birthdays/gifts
50 prescriptions/medicines
150 holidays/trips (either as a payment off a booking or as savings)
I know this essentially leaves over 243 but it gets eaten up somewhere usually and if not it’s put into savings.

my wages will increase in march as I have just been promoted. So hopefully I can save more.
