*Hi, I’m looking for advice on separating from my husband. I don’t currently earn enough to afford rent in my area (not a high-end area, just close to the centre, so it’s expensive). I plan to apply for Universal Credit to help with finances. I know UC has a cap in each area, which would cover about two-thirds of the cost of a one-bedroom flat for me and my child. However, estate agents I’ve contacted have mentioned a minimum income requirement, which only our joint income would meet. When I mentioned UC, they said they would get back to me but never did, which has happened with multiple agents.

Given the high demand for flats in my area, how can I realistically find a place to rent?*

Your council may have a list of landlords who are OK with people on benefits.

Thank you! I'll try contacting them
