Teens cost per year

I know it's a how long is a piece of string question but I never did the hair and makeup thing as a teen and want to be fair to my teen daughter while not breaking the bank.

How much should I be budgeting for annual haircuts? She has a short style so says she needs a £40 haircut ever 2 months. As I rarely go to the hairdresser myself £240 per year on a teen's hair seems crazy. Am I stingy or sensible?
What sort of budgets do you have for toiletries and clothing?
Thanks.

I have a 14yr old son so prices and priorities will be different to girls.

If her hair is just a cut you're about right there, if it's colour too then you'll need to up that budget significantly. My ds gets a skin fade and it's £20 every 3-4 weeks.

He gets £15pw lunch money and £20pm pocket money. I also pay for his gym at £3 a visit, football season ticket at £150, phone £8pm. Leisure he really doesn't do very much just £10 here and there for a McDonald's. We're in Scotland so bus travel is free.

Toiletries, just couple of aftershaves a year and a few £3 on tins of deodorant each month. I imagine this will be much higher for girls!!

Clothes are bloody expensive though and it's getting ridiculous - I could do it cheaper if I really forced it. I have probably spent well over £1000 in the last year on clothes.

About 100 gazillion should just about cover it. I have no idea other than knowing I am bled dry!

My 16 year old dd has a job. So i will offer her £30-40 per hair cut but if she wants gloss, fancy blow dries and extra colour she can pay for it herself.
With clothes I offer 30 a month but if she waants designer she can buy herself. I am paying £200 pm for her ski trip which I don't mind as she missed out on school trips because of covid.

I paid for hair cuts every eight weeks until 18 when they started paying for their own and added colouring! I still pay for their phone, £200 a month if they have a period without a weekend job. School uniform, clothes shopping trip every four months, £100 school lunch account a month. Currently at sixth form.

Oh, driving lessons and bought them a car too.

Its a piece of string question really based on what you want to do/can afford.

Why every 8 weeks, seems very often considering she's not paying. I'd offer to pay for 4 per year, I bought basic toiletries via shopping and kept them in a cupboard on the landing to help themselves to (deodorant, body spray, hair products (we all are curly haired), cleanser & moisturiser (Aldi). Plus the bathroom cupboard was kept stocked with sanitary products, shampoo etc. I bought mine battery razors at 12. Any other beauty was for birthday/Christmas or from pt job (they earned money from being choristers)

£40 is very cheap for a haircut, and it's quite a basic request. 2 months is fairly standard - I think you'd be very mean to deny her.

Until I stopped working recently I got a cut and partial hair highlights every three months. Cost about 120 each time.

Short hair needs cutting more often.

Up to you if you want to pay it though.

Mine weren't into this sort of thing but we found giving an allowance and then they could prioritise which clothes etc they wanted.

You can’t leave a short style that long. My boys are 11 and 14 and get their hair cut every 4 to 5 weeks. I have long hair so can easily go 10 to 12 weeks for a cut (not my roots though).

BeatriceAndLottie · 12/11/2024 15:23

The fact that you rarely go to the hairdresser yourself is irrelevant - different styles, lengths and hair types need cut at different intervals. I get mine cut every 6 weeks as it’s short, DD’s is long and can go 6 months without a cut. £40 every 8 weeks is very reasonable for a hair cut - at most salons around here it’s closer to £60 nowadays

How old is your DD? For example, at 15 DD got her hair highlighted every 6 months for around £100 per time. Add in 2 hair cuts per year and I would’ve spent ~£300 on her hair.
