Is £100 p/w normal?

I work full time, I live with my partner and have a daughter. Each month after I've paid my half of the bills,
Shopping etc I work out my money and I roughly have around £100 per week 'free money' I find I am not managing this and dip in to the following week. Am I bad with money or is this too low of a budget?

It’s a lot more than I have to myself!

winterdarkness · 16/10/2024 21:04

How do you buy clothes, shoes, make up?

It's not my case as I'm lucky to have a bit more disposable income, but I have plenty of friends who only buy occasionally from Vinted, never buy coffee and have been wearing the same jeans for 5 years. It's just how it is for many people

HaddyAbrams · 16/10/2024 21:05

£100 per week after bills is loads! I don't have that much a month!

Blankscreen · 16/10/2024 21:10

Id that to cover clothes that isn't a lot.

You might find you'd be better of having £50 a week to fritter on crap and building up a pot for clothes. Then you can go on a shopping spree as opposed to bits here and there which is what I used to do and felt like I never had any clothes/outfits.

We put £250 a month into a clothes 'pot' to cover me and the children and then I can actually buy some decent stuff.

Dh sorts himself out and spends a LOT in one go but goes shopping about twice a year.

redtrain123 · 16/10/2024 21:19

How often do you buy clothes and shoes etc? I probably don’t even spend £100 per month in clothes and shoes!

Pleasealexa · 16/10/2024 22:19

Do you have a bank account with a "pot" so you can transfer £100 a week or £400 a month and learn to live within this amount?

If £400 is just for your own personal spends, such as clothes, makeup, coffees, going out then it nearly £5k a year which feels reasonable.

kiana2015 · 16/10/2024 22:29

Treeinthesky · 16/10/2024 20:59

So if your partner moved in with you how much is he paying you or is he a cocklodger?
Isit exactly half inc shopping.

He does pay half towards bills but I pay for shopping as I do earn more than him so I think that's reasonable

To be honest a lot of my money does waste on silly unnessasssry things like lunch out coffees I must cut thing down. A couple have mentioned Vinted but I find stuff on there isn't much cheaper than shops especially once p&p and fees are added, is it just me?

I have £100pw fun money too and it doesn't go far. Of course I could spend nothing if I had to, but it's surprising how little £100 buys.

Today I bought a cardigan in TK Maxx and a few tops in M&S and that was £100 gone.

Yes this is my exact situation, obviously I could be more careful but I was curious if others have the same or I'm greedy

How often do you actually need to buy clothes, shoes and make up? I have around £700 a month spending money but the last time I bought shoes was July and I only bought a pair of work trousers last month (nothing so far this month). Do you actually need to buy these things every month?

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 16/10/2024 23:21

I could spend that in a day if I'm not careful

The whole point of jeans is that they last for decades!

kiana2015 · 16/10/2024 23:59

@Overthebow to be honest I do need clothes, last year I was pregnant and this year I don't fit into any of my pre pregnancy clothes so I kind of wear the same outfit give or take a cardigan change daily, I'm struggling to hide the belly

Do you mean £100 a week to spend on yourself. That's quite a good amount.

MidnightMeltdown · 17/10/2024 00:53

I don't think it's a lot if it's covering things you want to buy AND going out/socialising - but of course it depends on how much you go out.

I budget £100 per week just for going out/socialising. I usually have dinner out once a week, so half that budget will go just on that. Then there's drinks, cinema, show tickets, entrance fees, trains/taxis, coffees/lunches with friends etc, etc. £100 doesn't go very far these days. I don't spend it all every week, but some weeks I spend more, so it averages out.

I have a separate budget to cover clothes/random stuff I want to buy.

Whether it's a waste depends on your priorities though. To me, lunches and coffees out usually involve quality time with friends, so I'd rather spend on that than say, another new top that I don't really need.

Comefromaway · 17/10/2024 01:07

I have more disposable income but I don’t spend anywhere near that much. I put it in a savings account.

I tend to get a takeaway per week then I’ll get a bacon sandwich on a Friday at work. I don’t drink coffee but only buy teas out if I’m out somewhere eg a shopping trip so maybe once a month. I do get my nails done every 3 weeks for £35 & my hair done every -8 weeks which is £45. I reckon it’s probably £30-50 per week on average.

clotyes I tend to buy fewer but better quality. I might pick up the odd thing from Sainsburys maybe once a month and have a proper clothes shopping trip maybe every 3-4 months. I usually know what I need & shop around.

ConiferBat · 17/10/2024 01:09

I move £350 pcm for my spends.

I do not live a lavish lifestyle at all but it all goes.

Bloody hell, where are you buying your jeans? I wear jeans pretty much constantly and need a new pair regularly because they wear out.

caringcarer · 17/10/2024 01:36

When I was younger I would have loved to buy lots of new clothes, go out more but never had enough money to be able to afford it. When my parents asked me what I wanted for my birthday I'd say boots or a cardigan or a coat knowing I couldn't really afford to buy myself those things. Now I'm getting old I have the money to go out more and buy more stuff but find I don't care/can't be bothered to do so. I'm happier watching Netflix with a glass of Prosecco at home, a lot of nights. As for wearing makeup now it's about half a dozen times a year when I'm going somewhere special.

curiousS · 17/10/2024 04:34

It wouldn't be enough for me but I buy wine and cigs at the weekend!
If I wasn't then it's plenty

Sjdjb · 17/10/2024 06:05

If you’re buying all the food then are you buying all the top up shops and other bits such as light bulbs and batteries when you’re out and about?
Does your partner have the same amount for personal spending as you?
I would keep a note on your phone for a few weeks of every penny you spend and it will become clear. Spend as you are now and you might see £35 a week is going on top up shops and can work out a budget better.

Yes but how often are you buying clothes? I think buying several items a week is unusual. If its every couple of months then that's different- you'll have a lot of the fun money left over for other things.

I have about the same for personal spending money and I find it doesn't go far. I have a hobby and once I've paid for things I need there, and maybe a couple of lunches/ drinks with friends in a month, it just gets eaten up.
