Too late to switch gas deal? (After 1st oct)

We messed up and haven't fixed our energy by 1st oct as life has been hectic lately. Is it just too late now and not worth it? We're in a 3 bed semi that seems permanently cold, so we do use quite a bit of gas. So annoyed at myself!

Not according to Martin Lewis of money saving expert. If you go on mse they will guide you through the process to get the best deal.

Did mine this morning!

Ooh! Thank you @EducatingArti . I'm going to make that a job for tomorrow evening then.

No you can still fix. With octopus you can fix and then pull out if prices go down.
If you want to
Save £50 on your first bill then let me know and I will give you the intro code x

You can fix at any time but it doesn't always save money as the fixes are often more expensive than the price cap tariffs or the difference is trivial.

You're paying for certainty and the freedom from having to look at prices for a while and that costs.

Whether it's energy or mortgages, over the long term you're unlikely to be significantly better off if you always fix, because while you're protected from short term 'bill shocks', there could be quite a long period where you're paying slightly more than the best price available so that does add up over time.

If your house is 'always cold' have you done everything you can to increase energy efficiency?

Insulation, blocking drafts, closing doors? We started closing the living room door and it's made it warmer and significantly reduced our energy usage as that's where the thermostat is.

I fixed earlier this year on a variable tariff, so my prices were going to go up in October.
On the 4th September bill it says I was in the cheapest tariff....on the 13th I was told my costs are going up so checked tariffs and there was nothing cheaper. I checked yesterday and eon next had a v28 tariff that was cheaper! This surprised me

Bjorkdidit · 02/10/2024 07:37

I've just moved from Eon Next Pledge to the Eon v28 fix with a couple of clicks in my online account, which will save about £8 pm.

I could probably save slightly more and get a sign up bonus by switching back to Octopus, who I left about 3 months ago, but I CBA with the faffing with new DDs etc. But I'm now protected from the expected small price rise from January.

I also checked a few weeks ago and fixes were more expensive but now new cheaper versions have come out. However anyone thinking of fixing should do it sooner rather than later as the MSE newsletter with a 'get off the price cap and fix now' headline so it could well be that the new cheaper fixes sell out quickly.

Definitely not too late. i moved to Eon Next and then back to Octopus in September and fixed. Then they brought out a cheaper fix so I moved to that yesterday (Octopus has no exit fees which I like).

You can fix with them for 12 months and get £50 for switching if you're not already with them using a referral code like this one https://share.octopus.energy/bold-cub-608

I would get money if you used this one, but there are lots of others on the promo codes board if you preferred to use them.

E.On has a similar scheme with codes on that board and you can also fix with them or sit on the Pledge tariff which is always below the cap. The very cheapest seems to be Outfox the Market but it has exit fees, and I'd rather be able to switch again if I want to.

Octopus Energy

Octopus customers pay less: Cheaper than price-cap prices, rewards for using less when the grid is stressed, and smart tariff savings for your home, car or battery

The 'natural gas futures price' is going ballistic today, (Israel/Iran situation). It's up 17% in the last month. That will be reflected in the next price fix due on January 1st.

I'd fix.
