You got a meter
?

notnowbernadette · 27/09/2024 21:00

I agree your bill is high which makes me suspect you aren't on a meter. Is that right?

Lm1981 · 27/09/2024 21:11

We have a meter I believe , I am going to check tomorrow outside and see if it’s going up while no water is being used

I was going to say the opposite as that’s about twice what we pay. Although, we are in an older house with fewer bathrooms than a modern house which might make a difference

Anglian water is who we are with

That is high... Our last bill was £160 for a family of 4 and that's for 3 months!

Stressheadmumma · 28/09/2024 07:10

ours not quite as high but 75 a month and recently found out friends only paying half of that for same size household. Monitored meter yesterday and all seemed fine so then doesn’t suggest a leak. I am so puzzled why as can’t see any reason ours is double others. Asked so many people and only ones paying this much that’s it’s frustrating! I can see in Jan 2023 it looks like we started using more water and stayed high since but can’t figure out why or what happened then to cause it. So odd!

Guavafish1 · 28/09/2024 07:17

You need your water meter readings.

I have expressed similar concerns with my water company. I felt the bill was too high for what it should be! They said the bill was correct with all the meter reading and that I might have a leak!

I dont have a leak as I live in a block of flat. I asked the building maintenance if they could investigate water leak. They did and there was no leak.

Im not 100% happy with the water company response and I’m not sure they are correct.

I have now complained to ofwat.

WiserOlderElf · 28/09/2024 07:18

We’re on a meter, 5 of us in a 4 bed house, one disabled child who has 3 showers a day, and ours is only £65 per month so that does seem high.

lovemycbf · 28/09/2024 07:22

Water companies like us to pay some in advance so there's money on the account.
I phoned them and offered what my monthly usage actually is and they accepted , they wanted £110 per month but my actual usage is £55 so they accepted £60 a month

Sandybeaches5 · 28/09/2024 07:26

I was paying roughly £60.00 per month to Severn Trent (2 of us in the house) for years, until someone suggested I had a water meter.
I arranged to have one installed, but when the man came to fit it he said that he couldn't do it at that time as I needed to get a plumber to install more pipe work so that the meter could be positioned in a certain area.

Before I arranged for a plumber I contacted Severn Trent again to ask for my monthly bill to be reduced in the meantime, as there is only two of us in the house, and it isn't my fault that a meter couldn't be fitted as arranged. They agreed and I was pleasantly surprised to see my DD go down to a mere £15.00 per month!
The bill reduction started 12 months ago, and I've not had a meter installed either, as I'm just going to continue paying that small amount and hope it's kept low, and will then only consider a meter if it rises significantly.

Bjorkdidit · 28/09/2024 08:11

It will say on your bill whether you have a meter or not.

If not, can you get a meter? It should be cheaper (Moneysaving Expert rule of thumb is that if you have more bedrooms than people it's likely a meter will be cheaper).

If you can't get a meter, you can ask for an assessed charge, which will be less than rates on a 4 bed house as it's under occupied.

If you have a meter, you need to check for leaks as that does sound a lot. Unless you do use a lot of water - you can find calculators online where you enter details of how many showers, toilet flushes, car washes, laundry loads etc you use and how much water you should be using.

DoublePeonies · 28/09/2024 08:46

Anglican is one of the most expensive water suppliers, iirc.
So your bill is likely to be higher than many. But it still sounds very high, even given that.

Bromptotoo · 28/09/2024 09:00

That's a lot.

Have a word with Anglian and get it checked out.

Lm1981 · 28/09/2024 13:00

Have found the cause , there is a drip in one of the toilets in the house. We put some paper around the rim within 10 mins it was soaked. If you listen really closely you can hear a ping every 60 seconds. Plumber coming next week to replace the inlet value.

should see the bills drop to around £65 I think once that’s sorted

Me tooo!

Ours is high i think

Bromptotoo · 29/09/2024 09:35

@Lm1981 if you've paid over the odds for a while it's worth asking Anglian for a leakage allowance off your bill.

Page here from their website about leaks:

https://www.anglianwater.co.uk/services/water-supply/leakage/

We had a leak under the kitchen sink due to a defective join with the rising main; gallons of water going under the floor. We got a decent adjustment after it was fettled.

Lm1981 · 29/09/2024 10:07

Thank you @Bromptotoo that’s extremely helpful.
