@kittycat I shop at tesco usually. I will do a vegetable lasagne in my meal plan. Everyone will love that and great price, thank you.

We are the same setup, shop at Waitrose and £90-100 is our usual weekly shop. I don’t understand what you’re buying! Does that include a lot of alcohol?

DontBiteTheCat · 26/09/2024 19:56

If you shop at Tesco is it worth paying £7.99 a month for Clubcard Plus? It gives you 10% off your food shop twice a month, so it is worth it for me.

I knocked £35 off my shop today with one of the 10% codes and then clubcard prices on top.

IveGotToGoToMeDads · 26/09/2024 19:58

@Lemonadeand yes alcohol included, sorry i forgot to mention that.

We budget £125 per week for 2 adults and 1 child, that includes loo roll (if needed) and treats like alcohol free beer and branded snacks. We shop online at Ocado and they frequently send us a voucher because it would have been cheaper at Tesco. The online shop is great because you can add it up as you go along, we can easily spend £50 more going into a physical supermarket! I could cut us back to under £100 for the week if needed but to cut back any more I’d have to switch back to physically shopping in Lidl or Aldi.

IveGotToGoToMeDads · 26/09/2024 19:59

@DontBiteTheCat thank you. I will enquire about clubcard, as I dont have one.

i cook a chicken on a sunday a large one do roast dinner sunday and monday ,use it for sandwiches and do a jacket potato with it on a tuesday, the dog some as well. mince goes a long way, i slow cook big hot pots in winter and freeze some for next week.. pasta meals are cheap and filling, stir fry, oven chips and something an other night, just use cheaper makes and cut out expensive snacks, buy cleaning stuff from b and m type shops.you can do it

You shop at Tesco and don't have a Clubcard? That's bonkers. You've missed out on so many deals and free money. In the past we've paid for Christmas just by using the vouchers.

Rainbow1612 · 26/09/2024 20:12

We have a budget of £100 a week for 2 adults, 2 children, 2 dogs and a cat. Includes nappies and toiletries, most cleaning products etc. It can be tight but we manage.

IveGotToGoToMeDads · 26/09/2024 20:13

@HollyKnight i've never had a club card no, i'm going to get one because thats my regular shop.

If you shop at Tesco, you need a clubcard!

The truth is you need the cards for every supermarket. I have them on my phone because of we are somewhere else we may only be able to go to a Morrisons. Or a sainsburys.

Sad fact is nowadays if you don't sign up you don't get a cheaper shop. And even with card savings it's not cheap nowadays.

But I also absolutely second, third or whatever we are now!!!! Meal planning, batch cooking and online shopping.

DrinkElephants · 26/09/2024 20:20

Doable. We do a £50-£60 big shop and then £20 little one each week.

Its two of us plus a baby who is being weaned so I think £100 is doable.

itsgettingweird · 26/09/2024 20:20

I pay £3.50 a month for Asda midweek delivery pass. I have so far for £35 in my Xmas saver through Asda rewards.

That'll really help at Christmas because I'm also GF so shopping cheaply isn't always easy if you want any pre prepared food - even bread or a biscuits. And come Xmas I'll want (need 🤔😂) mince pies, xmas pudding and part baked rolls!

We're like you OP, around 140-150 a week just for two adults and a one year old. We eat a lot of fish, meat and vegetables in various varieties. The one year old likes expensive berries. I know what I need to do and it's eat more veggie meals and batch cook, but it's hard to change cooking habits!

NewSchoolYearRevamp · 26/09/2024 20:32

You must get a club card. Have you not seen the products with club card prices. You pretty much always get a discount on something then they send you money off vouchers if you spend over a certain amount and if your points build up you get a money off voucher.

IveGotToGoToMeDads · 26/09/2024 20:33

Thank you everyone for all your advice so far xx

Honestly £100 seems completely reasonable without much effort/ yellow stickers etc. we have 2 adults and 2 toddlers and I’ll be honestly I don’t really budget at all and I’m probably quite frivolous when food shopping but I doubt I spent that! We do hello fresh 3 days a week, it’s £35 for 3 portions 3 times a week however the key is to make 4 portions. They always give pre portioned spices/sauces etc and the instructions say use 3/4 for 3 people but of course you just use the lot and make it for 4 people. That means we get an extra lunch from every meal or build up a freezer stash for the kids. If you done that it would give you £65 for the other 4 days. I think that would be completely comfortable.

itsgettingweird · 26/09/2024 20:36

Tbh if you get a club card you'll likely be halfway towards your £40-50 a week saving without even changing what you buy!

Also keep an eye out for multi buy offers and change brands but not products to bulk buy. That's another huge saving - again without changing anything.

thismummydrinksgin · 26/09/2024 20:37

This threads amazing me, we are two adults two teens and we really struggle to keep it under control£700 a month

Overthebow · 26/09/2024 20:42

Easily doable, we spend around that for 2 adults and 2 children and we eat well and don’t really budget. Make a meal plan and include a couple of very cheap meals a week like jacket, beans and cheese or a basic pasta. Plan lunch food and everyone have wraps or sandwiches for a few days then switch it.

IveGotToGoToMeDads · 26/09/2024 20:44

@Overthebow thank you.
