I got caught shoplifting

1000 replies

RoseBiscuitll · 09/09/2024 15:02

I really didn't know what topic to choose for this

I'm mortified, I got caught shoplifting in boots today, I was stealing baby milk and a facial moisturiser. I'm so ashamed of myself. It was in the city center aswell. They didn't call police but they took my details, took a picture and told me I can't return to the store again

Will this picture and my details go around to the other shops near by or will it just go to the other boots shops.

I can't believe I was stupid enough to do this! I'm so embarrassed and also feel really guiltily!

@RoseBiscuitll

If you were working two years ago (when you took out the phone contract), what happened? You would have gotten pregnant a few months later… did you quit your job? Why didn’t you keep working and then take maternity leave with maternity pay?
What happened? Can you go back to that job?

Differentstarts · 10/09/2024 08:01

Ivehearditbothways · 10/09/2024 07:59

She says she gets a total of £700 a month and has to pay £250 in rent out of that. That leaves her with £450.

The problem there is that UC and child benefit is more than £700 a month but the OP won’t answer any questions about her finances or why she is getting such a low amount.

Exactly this their is a lot of us on this page me included on benefits or who have been on benefits so we know full well she's getting far more then that so it's very difficult to help someone figure out their finances when their lying about them. It makes it even harder when their is a lot of poster who have never been on benefits who have this perception of people on benefits as poor single mums with starving babies when it's just not the reality.

Jingleballs2 · 10/09/2024 08:01

Wow so you just didn't want to pay for your babies milk? Nice. God forbid you have to live without a facial moisturiser 🤷‍♀️

missdeamenor · 10/09/2024 08:16

Same thing happened to me when I was younger. I did it to get something for nothing. The guilt and the shame of it sticks with you. People shoplift for a million different reasons. If you were a bad person it wouldn't worry you. You are just one of many and they'll be too busy with the prolific shoplifters to worry about you. Move on and don't beat yourself up.

I agree, something is missing here, if the op is claiming all she can then she’s getting way more than just under 700.

Solent123 · 09/09/2024 23:50

you know nothing about the OP's situation - and no-one here is offering to send her money, what we're trying to do is point her in the right direction, what you're trying to do - well who knows but as someone who has worked on the front line with homeless people and those that are severely mentally ill I think compassion is a good starting point.

Edited

Someone DID offer to send her money. Fact.

I'm not going to tell you personal details, but I am all to aware and have swathes of sympathy with people that are homeless and poverty stricken and steal to feed themselves or children.

The OP isn't falling in this category. Her first post states she's worried about CCTV , she never claimed to be a victim. You're reading too much into it. Way too much.

Halloumiheaven · 10/09/2024 08:41

PaillettenBedeckt · 10/09/2024 00:54

I must have missed the post where OP announced she was Miss Moneybags and that she did this purely for a laugh.

Why do you think a mother of a young baby would steal baby formula? It was quite clearly out of desperation because of a low income. Which is a circumstance far too many people find themselves in today.

I wish I was imagining that people in the UK are becoming increasingly desperate in the face of rising prices. If only!

If this is the kind of nonsense you tell yourself to comfort yourself at night, no wonder you struggle with the very real concept of poverty.

You're extremely naive, and will not change your narrative despite there being no evidence to support it.

Take your blinkers off.

The cot is an investment.

It turns into a single bed

So will see her threw until she is a 5-6 year old child

I think it was well worth the money.

I mean mine was free and it’s been a cot then a bed for my daughter and it’s about to be 2nd babies cot ! So gonna get around 10 years out of it

Why are you talking about shopping for baby clothes in a shop? eBay? Vinted? You don't need to go into one.

I agree with one poster though. You don't seem that contrite actually. I can't place my finger on it but you seem not to be now.

Because she didn't steal out of desperation (she never originally said she did ) some posters are just determined to flog this hard left wing narrative that's she's a victim and stole out of sheer desperation.

There's evidence of some very sheltered lives on here. And the old hard left wing "shut down" comes out (name calling, accusations of "having no empathy") it's honestly like living in a parallel universe.

God forbid we apply this assumed victim narrative to all committers of crime (and god help the victims).

And the old "baby milk=must be desperate" Is getting very tiring. She added face cream. Baby milk is often stolen, high up the list. Desperation is the lesser likely reason of choice.

I think she made a mistake and should chalk it up to experience and not repeat it. But with her new victim cape worn and readily supplied justifications from posters on here - I expect it'll perhaps happen again.

I have a feeling you are right and this won't be the last time.

I don't expect any of those desperate to believe it was pure desperation have ever encountered working in a shop in a deprived town in the UK.

On the plus side, I'd love to have some of these posters as my on duty solicitor if I got into some petty crime - the ability to manipulate them would be so easy and it looks like you wouldn't even have to offer them a sob story - they'd find one for you !

Wineandcupcakes · 10/09/2024 09:09

I’m also a little worried as so many posters have rushed in to tell her how acceptable and understandable it is. They have run with she’s a poor starving single mother, forced to steal baby milk or she herself must starve , that she had no choice. Almost dickension in its grim tragedy.

and I’m not 100 percent convinced that’s true. The benefits numbers are off. As is she could afford the milk but only had 12 quid. She’s warmed to her theme, that’s for sure, but the main focus remains on will they recognise me and can I go to other boots shops.

HollyKnight · 10/09/2024 09:10

There is a reason why beggars on the street "borrow" babies. Babies have pity power.

RoyallyEFFEDOFF · 10/09/2024 09:49

Why are people saying the benefit amount is off when it’s not?

Single allowance £393.45 + Child allowance £287.92 = £681.37
Child benefit at £102 makes that £783.77
Take off £250 for a rent top up and it’s £533 a month to live off.

Snugglemonkey · 10/09/2024 09:50

SadOrWickedFairy · 09/09/2024 16:32

You've got to be pretty desperate to gee yourself up to steal formula).

Still feel that way after reading the OP's update that they did have the money to pay for the formula @Galiana ?

But then she wouldn't be able to buy the food she needed. That is not really having money for formula. She needs food too.

She said she had the money for it

She also said she wanted to keep the money for food. Another necessity.

Plus the money towards the rent. The Healthy Start card. Council tax support? That's over £1500 a month.

It’s not £1500 surplus though is it. It’s just over £500.
Once everything is accounted for.

The point being made is you get an enormous amount more than less than 700 a month , and if you can’t afford to feed yourself you can get food bank vouchers. But you’re rent, is paid for you, all major expenses are subsidised. You even get vouchers to help with milk.
