Pay rise back dated, do I have to inform UC

Hi, I've only been claiming UC for a few months. I work full time for the NHS and have just received my pay rise, back dated to April so it is a one off extra sum of approximately £300. It's a one off for this month and then from next month my pay rise will mean my pay will be around £20 more per month. Do I have to tell UC on my online journal or will they be informed by my my employer and adjust our UC payments accordingly? Don't want to have an overpayment to pay back or be accused of not reporting changes. Thanks for your help

I've never reported pay rises or one off bonuses. They get income details for the assessment period every month through your employer.

.at my nhs trust they offer you a pay rise over a period of months so its minimal effect to UC

No you won't need to report it unless you normally report your earnings manually each month. HMRC will let them know and your UC payment will be calculated accordingly.

I’m shocked that you have your backdated pay already!

I don’t get benefits but assume that you would have to inform them.

Last time people in our trust were given the option to have the backdated pay spread out to help those on benefits.

If it's paid, as I'd expect, through payroll then they will pick it up as HMRC pass that information on to UC and it's used to claculate your monthly payment.

£300 won't cause any issues but large amounts can. I believe some NHS staff had the options of lump sums by instalments so as not to upset UC claims.

mine was years ago back with tax credits.

but I got a backdated pay rise while on mat leave, and yes it affected my TC as they treat it as a current payment in that month/tax year.

Miley1967 · 29/08/2024 16:34

It will automatically be reported by your employer and UC notified through HMRC. It will be treated the same as wages/ earnings.

itsgettingweird · 29/08/2024 16:35

If it's been paid through your usual PAYE then HMRC will know and it'll automatically be including in your earnings for next months assessment.

I'm in education and that's what happened to me.

So I had a nil award the month after and the month after that was adjusted to what was my new UC award based on new monthly earning.

I thought we all got it back
dated in Octobers pay? Is it different for different trusts?

DrCoconut · 29/08/2024 16:39

They will take money off you. Bonuses are often a bit crap for people on UC as you don't see most of your reward/motivator/whatever it is supposed to be.

Thanks for all your replies. It was very quick from them announcing the pay rise and it being paid so I didn't have chance for it to be spread across a number of months. I expect I will get less UC this month and then it will be adjusted each month after that.
